The Big Ten is pretty much stalking NYC at this point, over-obsessing about it. I picture Delaney standing on a corner in Lower Manhattan, dirty, unshaven, same clothes for weeks, just screaming at people "please care about the Big Ten. We are your hometown league. We have Rutgers now."

However, this idea of having a day-night hockey/basketball doubleheader in 2016 and 2017 at MSG is kinda cool. Michigan and Penn State's bball and hockey programs will play in the first event on January 30.

It makes me think that it might be a good idea for the ACC to do something similar, maybe holding a 2 session, 4 game basketball day during the season. The problem though would be getting teams to give up home games to do that. Maybe schools like BC, VT, and Miami would. I'm sure PSU did in this case.

It would be a lot easier to get ACC teams playing OOC games there for an event. It was pretty short-sighted to shaft that ACC/A10 event in Brooklyn the way they did. As smart as Swofford looked in getting that venue for the ACCT, he is still stupidly reluctant to go all-in on leveraging NYC.

Yes, it would but it also wouldn't have the ACC "cache." A 1 day event, lets say that would look and feel like a conference tournament would be a pretty cool thing I think. If teams with attendance issues (FSU, Miami, VT, BC) gave up home games, the event could look like this:

noon - Pitt vs BC
2:30 - Clemson vs VT

7:00 - FSU vs Wake Forest
9:30 - Miami vs GT

NYC would not shut down for that event but its no worse than a PSU/Mich doubleheader.

There's so many new ideas right now for in-season events that I think the ACC has to try to come up with something other than sending its worst teams to Brooklyn to face bad A10 teams.

Who the hell if gonna go watch PSU/Mich in a hockey/basketball double header in MSG?

Well, maybe PSU and Much alumi in the area.

But, then again, PSU sucks in basketball and even most of the alumni don't follow them.

The B10 is trying to push their product into the eastern megalopolis but nobody on the east coast has any interest. They should take their product and throw it off the Sears Tower in Chicago.

Outside of UNC, Duke, Louisville, and Syracuse, I don't think there's all that much interest in the ACC product in NYC (maybe Notre Dame too). But, that's true of the entire nation... you can't just throw BC/Pitt; VT/Clemson; GT/Miami; & FSU/Wake Forest on the marquee and expect people to flock because its ACC basketball.

The only way this makes sense from a ACC/MSG perspective is if, in mid/late February, you throw something like this out there...

Noon - North Carolina vs Pittsburgh (or any mid level ACC team)
2:30 - Notre Dame vs NC State

7:00 - Syracuse vs Louisville
9:30 - Duke vs Virginia

That's a mega event late in the conference season.

Come on. They are trying to sell tickets for Pitt vs Davidson and PSU vs Mich. Its not even about selling tickets, its about getting your league's name out there and increasing brand awareness.

I think we (Pitt) would be a bigger draw at MSG than most, if not all, of the original ACC teams.

There were all those years in the BE and the championships in the BET. What was it, 7 out of 8 years we made it to the BET final, winning two of them?

SNY carried Pitt games all the time (well, when Cuse was not playing on the same night) so the people in NYC metro are a lot more familiar with Pitt than most, or all, of those original ACC teams.

Duke and UNC? Are you drunk?

And that really has nothing to do with where the games are played when its crap like BC/Pitt or VT/Clemson. Putting games like BC/Pitt, VT/Clemson, GT/Miami, Wake/FSU in MSG as a "showcase" for your league just showcases how bad the play in the league is, outside of the top 6 teams or so. Is that really the brand awareness you want in NYC, teams like BC, VT, GT, Wake, etc?

The Big Ten is doing what they are doing because they know Penn State and Michigan both have tons of alumns in NYC, and this is a unique event in that its a hockey/hoops doubleheader. They aren't going to put Nebraska-Northwestern in MSG to increase brand awareness. According to the WSJ in 2010, there were over 23,000 PSU alums in NYC, and over 12,500 Michigan alumns in the city. Those were the two highest amongst the big "football" schools, though I'm sure Syracuse and Duke (and maybe UNC) have as many or more in the NYC area. MSG will fill up for this hockey/hoops doubleheader with Michigan/Duke... MSG wouldn't come close to filling up with BC/Pitt, VT/Clemson, etc.

It is clear that Duke has a much better rep than us.

But, the people that might attend a game at MSG... sheesh... you might just draw more with Rutgers than Duke (just because they are local to NYC metro).

But yeah, thinking about this a bit... our rep has gone down over the last four years with our 'less than previous' performances.

A Pitt/Cuse or Pitt/Georgetown matchup might be a good draw at MSG... but I wonder who is gonna come out to see Pitt/Davidson.

Would Duke/Davidson draw more than Pitt/Davidson? Yeah, probably. But, I don't think UNC would be much better.

Ya know, you would think MSG could have found a higher profile opponent for us. Temple? UConn? There are lots of them out there even in the northeast. But, Davidson???

Holy crap!! You think Rutgers would draw more than Duke to MSG?? We were there for that great Pitt-Duke game in 2007. I'd say the crowd was about 2-1 DUKE fans....some pretty arrogant, BTW....and Pitt has always had good fan support in NYC. Rutgers doesn't draw flies. Anywhere.

Duke is like the ND of college basketball.

PSU/Mich bball will draw 6,000 (5,000 Mich 1,000 PSU)
PSU/Mich hockey will draw 4,000 (2,000 Mich, 2000 PSU)
Pitt/Davidson will draw 5,000
A lower-end ACC DH would probably draw 8000-10,000
A high-end ACC DH would sell-out.

You're drunk if you think a lower end ACC double header would draw almost twice what PSU/Michigan would draw.

I went to the Pitt-OkSt game a few years ago which was directly preceded by Duke-Washington. After that first game ended, about 80% of the crowd left.

Huh? Alumni in NYC or not, PSU has no basketball fans. PSU is a "low-end" team, no different than VT, BC, Wake, etc.

Michigan might bring in a few thousand but if you market an ACC Doubleheader, with mostly lower-end teams but maybe thrown in at least 1 middle tier team in there like Pitt, ND, UVa (they wont be elite forever probably) and you'd easily outdraw a stand-alone PSU/Mich game. 2 games draw more than 1, maybe double the amount.

Michigan has a TON of alums in the NYC metroplex. Not saying that translates to a sold out MSG, but they do turn out for Michigan football and hoops. I'd have to think it would be a respectable crowd for the hoops game.
