Brick by Brick

One thing that concerns me about the last two coaches is the way Malik Ellison and Ithiel Horton were talked up as all-conference players. Hell, even Gerald Drumgoole was in the starting rotation to start a season (I get it; that happens sometimes while teams are still finding themselves). How bad must these practices have been for these guys to give off those sorts of impressions?

Lyke smiles too much. I don't trust people who smile that much.

Hard to believe that any Pitt fan would believe either Capel or Lyke at this point. They have misled constantly.

"Brick by brick" is an interesting slogan for a hoops program, based on the meaning of the word "brick" as used in basketball.
Well, it's the most accurate thing he's said....his sneaky way of blaming the players for the losses

I'm so sick of his excuses and placing the blame of his numerous failures on the players. For all intents and purposes, we have no head coach until he's gone.

Heather’s a clown and you guys bought it hook line and sinker . Any mild criticism was met with vitriol. Now she made a $15 million mistake and it’s clear go rev up the clown car

Pitt plays the way they practice. Pitt’s D allows the Ellisons and Hortons of the world to shoot a game of HORSE - much like you see in real games. It’s a blend of scheme and talent - and talent includes buying in to what the man is coaching. Not sure who or what to blame.

beginning to agree. a few things I've heard recently proves she is a big compliance wonk and she is doing some things to support that. As I posted previously, when compared to Barnes, Bozik, Long, Jaynes she is a superstar. But this whole Capel contract, along with womens BB, ignoring Heinz field attendance with a total lack of promotion, etc. really leads me to not put much faith in her. She is rapidly approaching the level of the losers mentioned previously.

I know some will argue but I think Pederson is above her now. He never made a move as dumb as the Capel contract, although the move to Heinz is still open to debate. And no firing Wanny was not dumb, the cast of characters to replace him were. But their contracts weren't crippling like Capels.

Any hire would look great after Steve and Scott (and the jabronies you mentioned). I mean my God.

Capel was the wrong coach for the dumpster fire she inherited. His record of success as a head coach didn't warrant bringing him to Pitt. Though many here loved that hire, strangely. If Narduzzi retired today it would be like Pitt hiring Dan Mullen of Justin Fuente to replace him.

If Capel can land a couple nice portal guys and a couple of the HS guys, I'll "change" my tune - for now. Who knew Gueye would be a very solid piece here. I'm holding out hope because I want Pitt to be good so friggen bad. It just sucks to see too other HC's making staff changes and we're stuck with what we got. Ewing and Gtown fired 2 coaches and now they're in on all of these recruits because of new hires. Not Pitt though!!!

Either Capel is incapable of making changes because of his incompetence, is afraid to make changes, or really doesn't care.

I’d say option 1 or 3 haha. More of one because he likes loyalty and doesn’t see that recruiting sucks.

It seems to me it comes down to priorities for him. His loyalty to his brother and to his assistant coaches/friends outweighs his willingness to replace underperforming assistants who keep Pitt from winning.

And since his paycheck is guaranteed, he feels no sense of urgency.

Very good point. He cares more about keeping his staff and being loyal to them than about the program and the players in the program. You're right....he could just go through the motions, which he is doing now, and do essentially nothing for the next year and get a big paycheck. What does he care?

He may very well expect that he is simply a victim of bad luck and that his "bad luck" can't last forever, that his coaches are not responsible for the lack of ball movement, poor player decision making, failed recruiting strategy, etc.

When I'm not making the grade at work, I worry that continuing on the same path will result in a pink slip. If my job/income were guaranteed for the next few years, there's little incentive for self reflection.

So, when you and I say he's just going through the motions or that he doesn't care, I'm not sure what's going on in his head. I'm not ready to attribute dishonest intent to him. But he obviously isn't under any real financial pressure to change.

Yeah, the victim card is one of his best plays.

I would also hope that he isn't being intentionally dishonest, but I don't know what he's thinking and I don't know him and don't want to know him. But financially, he's set for a while and you're right....he has no incentive to do anything differently.
