The Haywood presser was one of my all-time favorite moments in Pitt history.
It was simultaneously puzzling and confusing and disturbing and hilarious and depressing. It was incredible the gamut of emotions I went through the day.
It confirmed all of my worst fears about how that athletic department was being run.
First, let me just talk about his surly demeanor. He seemed borderline irate with everyone in the room right from the start. I have never seen that strategy employed before at an introductory press conference.
It was almost as if he wanted to fistfight some of the reporters in attendance.
Then he went on and on and compared himself to a fictional mass murderer, promised his players would look him in the eye and sit up straight, and finally concluded with an andidote about how he has always like to take catnaps at his locker just before kick off.
It left everyone in attendance, and those watching at home, looking at each other in complete bewilderment.
Awesome!
Perhaps the best part was reading this message board in the immediate aftermath. People were doing whatever they could to try and justify the bizarre behavior we had all just witnessed from our new head football coach.
I remember people vowing to run through a wall for the guy wondering if we had just watched the same press conference?
Then, a few days later, he beat the hell out of his baby mama and it surprised absolutely nobody who had seen that lunatic's surreal press conference performance.
Good times!
I used to re-watch the press conference when I needed a lift. Nowadays, I just resort to this…
