The Capel bashers keep looking at each transfer as further proof that Capel is failing. In actuality the only transfer that I would have liked to stay was Ithiel. The rest is simply addition by subtraction. I'm sure each one came after a heart to heart with Capel. Clearing space for a third rebuild. We shall see how it turns out.

Pitt won just 11 games with last year’s roster. Players leaving and seeking new opportunities is very much “en vogue”.

However it must also be pointed out that these guys leaving were brought in by Capel. So while all of the available transfers out there make it possible to overhaul a team quickly if it is done right, Jeff Capel must show he can do a better job of acquiring the right talent and putting together a winning team. Because that is still very much to be determined.

No doubt those of us who want Pitt to succeed are pulling for Capel to make it happen. So we’ll have to wait and see. 🤞

They are Failing. You would have to be BLIND not to see that.. 6 Straight years of Losing Seasons.. Players can’t leave Pitt fast enough..

If you think Capel can Build a Team each season from the Portal, then you are extremely Dumb..

The mass exodus yet again proves that this Staff is Terrible and the Pitt Program will continue to be a Bottom Feeder ACC Program until this Incompetent Staff is Fired..

Bringing in terrible players and then seeing those terrible players transfer out isn't exactly succeeding...

How could any Pitt fan not be characterized as a "Capel basher" at this point?

To be clear, I don't like the childish personal attacks on the guy, posters calling him an idiot, stupid, incompetent, etc. I don't think he's any of those things. But when he was hired his job was to rebuild this program and win games, to lead the resurgence of the program. He has failed at that job by any and every measure. He went into it with the best of intentions, but this job ate him up. He wasn't strong enough, prepared enough or coach enough to rebuild this wreck.

As for addition by subtraction, we just subtracted 6, added one. You have to field a team, and right now we don't have one. I'm sure he will round out the roster, but with who/what? Do we realistically expect to bring in the kind of transfers that would give us a meaningfully better overall group of players next season than we had this season?

When you replace junk with junk, what do you get?

7 months till first game.

Whats to say this years group of transfers wont be the same? Cal st to the ACC versus Duke - really?

I understand that calling him names is a reflection of the poster not Capel, but there is something hugely wrong. Does he lack the intelligence (stupid), intelligence with social skill deficiencies (idiot), lack of knowledge and/or teaching skills and/or communication skills (incompetent), lack of character-he seems to be making excuses/blaming others/giving high value to anything that is not in place (i.e. the "Horton is the great answer fiasco", so on and so forth.
So I will say again something is really wrong and there is no term that is positive with which to label to it.

I think he’s plenty intelligent. I don’t think he works very hard. I don’t think he has a lot of determination. He should be fighting for his professional life and rep right now and I don’t get any sense that he’s doing that. I think it was a red flag when immediately after he was hired he put his brother on the payroll. I think it’s a red flag that his brother is still on the payroll. He strikes me as not being very genuine, and that’s going beyond his media presence.

That’s just my long range, outsider perspective on the man. FWIW

That's a good sign. We need players.
No doubt. I have some reservations about his overall game in conjunction with the team concept, but we need players and at his best, he’s a pretty decent one.

While I understand your thoughts about his brother, I don’t agree that we should question Capel’s determination. He’s attacking the transfer portal as we thought he should. The question is whether he can secure the players he needs.

So you are telling me this group will be like the others. I just say we have to wait 7 months to find out.

not being very genuine,
You make very good points. This one item stands out because I think when the coach (or boss for that matter) is not genuine, all but the teacher's pet know it. Now some coaches who are talented get away with not being genuine because the players can see the benefit of their teaching/style of play, etc., but if you are not genuine and have no identity outside of counting on a style of play in which having better players all the time is the key, the feeling will be just as Horton's father explained it.

I don’t know. Shouldn’t he have been attacking the recruiting trail with a vengeance, re-examining his own methods and philosophies and the type of identity he wants to instill, the concepts he’s been using that haven’t worked, and reorganizing his staff to the extent they aren’t getting it done on the trail or anywhere else?

Seems like putting all his eggs in the portal basket isn’t really a strategy, and is too little, too late. After 4 really bad years it seems unlikely that he can sell hope and change to the kind of transfers he’d need to bring in to have an Iowa State type turnaround.

I just don’t see things getting much better with this regime, if any better.

The "too little, too late" part is very accurate. If Capel was doing his job earlier, he would have hauled in some serviceable high school guys before this. He hasn't done that and is now forced to offer every portal guy out there, it seems, and see if any accept.

Now we have to wait and see if he can scrounge up even 2 or 3 good ones from the portal that will be ready to play in November. He will probably need more than that, but it would be out of the question to expect any more than that with this coach and staff.

After all is said and done, will the 2022-23 Pitt team be at least as good as the 2021-22 team? I have my doubts.

I agree with all of this. This portal grab might help cobble together a somewhat respectful roster next year, but in the long run it’s absolutely no way to build sustained success (and of course this is doubly true because we know Capel’s track record).

I mean we as Pitt fans saw that model work for a decade. Yes it was before college free agency, but even if the transfer portal existed back in the mid-to-late 2000s I doubt many players would have left because of the environment created through recruiting players that fit the system and culture.

Your living in the past , kids want to play now and be instantly successful, their parents , handlers , ex coaches are all telling them what the kid wants to hear .

Will Jeffress might be the exception, he appears to want to stay and put in the hard work to get better and what does our knowledgeable fan base think about him ?

JC has not found a model that works for him at Pitt with recruiting .Trying to recruit high school kids that can come in and play at the ACC level has been a failure for the most part .

Unless you can get elite level guys the portal is a better option for schools like Pitt , why wouldn’t you want older more experienced players who’ve you had the opportunity to see play at the college level vs high school kids who need seasoning . Plus if they’re not seeing PT they leave !

I was really impressed w him, not often make a bad read, but over time there is a clear pattern of him making excuses and putting responsibility of failures on the players disproportionate to what he should be owning.

Still think he has a sharp eye for talent, but has weird patterns in recruiting where he runs hot early then drifts on a lot of kids, and far too often under recruiting, which has left him short handed EVERY season.

Way too many issues w his team in and outside the locker room.

I could not defend his bringing Jason on his staff, but had faith he had a plan. That he has made no staff changes is a clear indictment he's playing his contract out.

I think that inconsistency is what most frustrates fans. It seemed like just about everyone of our players had a good game, followed immediately with a horrid outing, Burton included.

A school like Pitt shouldn't recruit HS players outside the Top 150. If they cant help you in their 1st or 2nd year, there's no point
