Here's a question to you all. From everything I have seen, "foreign" automotive companies have made more of an investment in America and American workers, so what exactly is "buy American"?

Sounds pretty clear to me. Buy a car manufactured in America by Americans.

If the model was made here. Not all are. Some are made in Canada for example. It seemed clear that Trump was talking about American workers and not corporate profits.

Shouldn’t the sentiment of “Buy American” be commonplace though? Sure some things you’re going to buy are going to be made overseas. But take boots for example, I buy American because my boots are important to me and It is money well spent to buy boots made in the USA, I’m sure there are a lot of products out there where this is the case.

    I'm confused :(
Is this just a slogan or is there some 'new' incentive program to help the auto industry sell cars?

An again, I don't mean to disparage Trump, but it is such an archaic and tired saying. What is American? Especially cars.

Another product, if you research a little bit, is tires. I buy american made tires, the quality ratings and price are well within acceptable range.

I mean it is a legit question. My company, our corporate HQ is in London. We were one of the 5 original companies to trade on the London Exchange. So we are technically a UK company. But in our division, all manufacturing is done in the US, Canada and a Mexican site. But primarily US. We make the raw block materials and do all post and fabrication here in the US. So our President is US, VP's, US, Sales, Accounts, HR, and of course plant workers are US (Americans). Our CEO is British. TheBoard of Directors are UK.

    Are we American?

Pretty simple. It's a car where American workers are making it in America. It doesn't matter if some parts are made in Germany, Japan, Korea. If the parts are used to make a car and it's made in America, then it's American.

I don't know of a car made in America that is 100% made with American parts. There is no such thing, and there is no such thing in any other country in the world.

From a national security and economic perspective the key is making sure all of the critical components are manufactured in the US.

This not only provides jobs but ensures in critical times WE have access to production.

It really isnt complicated. So buy american means buying products that are principally made in the US by US workers. In the case of the car, if most of the components are made and assembled here that would qualify.

The real issue is products that are completed over seas or whose key components are made over seas.

It really is something that as a nation needs to be intelligently addressed

Nobody listens to Peter Navarro. But they should. Really every interview from Lighthizer, Navarro, Ross, and Mnuchin are worth watching.

I know man, I’m just messing with you. It’s not a cut and dry answer anymore. Hell, we had a thread about Budweiser being American made even though it’s parent company is foreign.

    all good questions.

I don't know why you find this so difficult. I already said this once. I guess it needs repeated. Focus on just these words in Trump's tweet.

"Build better and safer American cars and create American jobs. Buy American!"
