Here's one for ya.... thought of this as a joke a while back but now.... doesn't seem like a joke at all.

Newkirk, had a terrible year last year. Turning the ball over and seemingly out of sync with the rest of the team, marching to his own drum, etc. Regressing from his play the previous year. And now he has had surgery (in which case an injury MAY have affected his play last year). So, a real question mark going into the season if ever their was one.

Then there's Wilson. Whether or not he will be eligible has been questioned because his HS has had some problems along those lines in the past. And, even if he is able to make it no problem, he will be a freshman with no experience at this level.

So, what about Cam Johnson spelling Robinson at PG? Hey, he played PG in HS, and one of the reasons Dixon said he was not gonna RS him (ended up with a medical RS I presume) was because he has such a good handle.

Right now, with all the new bigs, I really doubt we are gonna be seeing much if anything of Sheldon Jeter at PF, and what I saw of Jeter last year, is he seems to get better the longer he is in there... usually better in the second half or down the stretch. So, you would want to start Jeter at SF and play him starter minutes there.

Meanwhile, Chris Jones was not bad at all last year... particularly the 5-6 3balls against Cuse in the dome, and should be better this year. So, what you would want to do with Jones, is use him to spell Jeter but ALSO spell Sterling Smith as well. This would give him starter minutes off the bench and you WANT that because CJ can play.

So, with this, where does it leave Cam Johnson if he is a 2/3 player as well? Well, if does not leave him with many minutes at all.

But, if you used him to spell Robinson.... THINK ABOUT IT! If Slim gets an open look he is gonna nail those 3balls and he would be really hard to cover if playing PG due to a significant height advantage over whomever was guarding him. Yeah, when it came time to sit Robinson then it would be like... whoa!

And, THIS is how you would get Slim into the game. Maybe play some 2/3 also.

The OTHER thing... IMO it is critical to get an impact player spelling Robinson coming off the bench... because that takes a major load off of Robinson's shoulders... and with this JRob might just have a great senior season.

Now.... to be honest I am not sure this is something that Dixon would even consider (though, I could be and hope to be wrong on this).

But, IMO it is something he SHOULD consider.

No?

Not a bad thought. Might have to try it if Newkirk isn't recovered and Wilson dosen't make it due to academics. Otherwise he probably sees 2-3 time when a long range shooter is needed,

I agree-- not a terrible thought. But's it's not anywhere close to anyone's radar screen on the staff at this time, or anytime this coming season. In fact, the only thing on the radar screen for Cam at this time is seeing that he can be ready to play. And from what I understand, he's got quite a long way to go before he's anywhere close to ready.

Cam looked to have the potential to be a real solid player at times last year. I just hope the kid can stay healthy. He could have a bright future. I did not notice him handling the ball much in his limited time last year. not sure if he can handle pressure without turning it over or could distribute the ball well enough.

He can handle and pass pretty well. Pretty good for a 2 or 3, but not really for a Division I level point guard. This year, James, Josh, Damon and Sterling will be the guys who get work at the point. Maybe that changes if Josh doesn't heal or Damon has eligibility issues.

Honestly, between his injury and and his youth/inexperience, I think it would be best for him to redshirt this year. I think he could become a very good player in time, perhaps even becoming a very valuable, long range shooting, big PG at some point. A redshirt will give him 3 more years after this coming season. And the longer we wait, the better he will become.

Nothing improves a player like playing actual, meaningful games. If the kid is healthy, he'll get minutes. We need guard depth, esp. if Nuke is hobbled.

I would think that Slim got a medical RS for this past year. Seemed to satisfy the need of not playing past a certain date. Does anyone know for sure on this?

Absolutely no point in another redshirt year if he already injury redshirted last season. You have 5 years to play 4. Even if he gets minimal minutes this year it can only help not hurt. Makes no sense for him not to play this season (unless, of course, last season was not an injury redshirt year and he only has 3 years of eligibility left).

Aren't all red shirts medical in nature in hoops? I don't believe there is such a thing as a healthy red shirt. I could be wrong though....

I know CJ played PG in HS, but there is a very limited sample of him handling the ball during play this year. The idea has merit, but he has to be able to handle the ball. I thought his injury was shoulder(?) - does anyone have an update on his progress this spring? If CJ is quick enough at his size to beat guys off the dribble and won't turn the ball over - I would be willing to take a flyer on having a taller PG than most teams. That being said, I was critical of Newkirk throughout the year, and I hope he makes a full recovery. I hope BK can get inside Newkirk's head and straighten him out this summer.

Sure there is a "healthy" redshirt. But to get one you can't play at all. If you play even one minute in one game then you can only redshirt for medical reasons. To get a medical redshirt you have to play in less than a certain percentage of your team's games. I believe the number currently is 30%. So if your team has 32 scheduled games, if you play 9 you can still qualify for a medical redshirt. If you play 10 you cannot.

Johnson qualifies for a medical redshirt for last season.

Ah, I knew there was some regulations around that, just not sure what they were.

Just want to say on this one... yeah, Slim's well being, ability to play and getting a chance to ease into regular playing time... should come first.

Also, it remains to be seen re Wilson and Newkirk.

But, down the line... should keep this idea (well, Dixon should) in the back of the head.

Would be really significant to get an impact player spelling Robinson as that would take a huge load off of JRob's shoulders and allow him to have the senior year I am sure he is hoping for.
