Another game, another massive first half deficit. Pitt came out completely flat, no energy, no effort. And what does Capel do? NOTHING.
Capel just stood on the sideline watching Pitt get embarrassed on their home court against a terrible Virginia team and didn’t bother to call timeout to stop their momentum or chew out his team that clearly didn’t care to be there.
Pitt didn’t call a timeout until there were 22 seconds left in the first half. In that time, Pitt went scoreless for 7.5 minutes and Virginia went on a 17-0 scoring run. Virginia shot 57% in the first half, but no timeouts to stop their momentum. No substitutions to see if someone could provide a spark or, at the very least, show some heart.
I know some people hate the “Capel just rolls the ball out” stuff, but seriously, what is he doing if he’s just going to stand there while the team gets embarrassed?
This team isn’t the most talented team in Pitt history, but they’re absolutely more talented than they’ve been showing since ACC play started. It’s just so frustrating that tonight’s lack of effort/caring pretty much guarantees another year with no tournament.
