They had Levance on by phone. Great to hear him — guests the previous two weeks were Sam Clancy and DeJuan Blair. Good stuff.

Transfer Horton was on too. Coach went out of his way to say how helpful Horton has been to Pitt in preparing for opponents.

Coach said Horton has been even better than he thought he was...

Horton said he came here because he always wanted to play for Duke — the Capel Connection.

Coach said he was astonished when he watched his video that Horton was at Delaware. Said he has “pop.” Coach clearly indicated he thinks Horton will be immediate help next season.

(I know, I know, we’ve heard this before, but you could hear the genuine enthusiasm for Horton in Coach’s voice. )

Horton is really well spoken, too.

Go Pitt.

Haha remember when Malik Ellison was the next coming of Ben Simmons???

I do think Horton will be a nice piece next year, though.

Assuming everyone comes back next year, I am looking forward to Horton providing a nice scoring punch off of the bench.

Well, the key difference is that Ellison had 1300+ minutes worth of evidence that he wasn't any good. Horton, on the other hand, was very good as a freshman. You might have some reservations about the step up to the ACC, but I'm much more confident in the guy shooting 43.3/40.9/78.6 than the guy who shot 39.9/33.3/62.7. It would have taken a miracle for Ellison to be anything more than a warm body in the ACC.

Shooting travels.

I love how Capel is making the former greats part of the program. He literally created a position for Ramon. Blair is back in school and is around the team. Now the Fields thing. They had Page signing autographs one game (where was that BTW, woulda got 1 for my kid, he knows about the dunk from YouTube) and Blair will be too. But I'd like to see them do a "Legend of the Game" where they interview a player at a TO.

He was on the concourse behind section 101/102, which is the end zone where Pitt shoots in the second half. When I walked near there that day there was a pretty long line of people waiting to get one.

A few thoughts:

- Capel really just "gets it," man. The way he's been so active in engaging the lettermen, both from the Fields/Ramon/Blair era and from the greats from decades prior, he's really just been fantastic in trying to get everyone on board...and it seems like the letterman community has bought in to what his vision is, too. That doesn't always happen when you have a program that had consistency for so long in its head coach, but Capel has done a really nice job in so many of the "little things" of being a program builder.

- Really excited for Ithiel Horton. We've heard enough of Capel by now to know that he isn't a sugar-coater. If he's saying that Horton is this good, then I'm inclined to believe him. I have a feeling that the redshirt year is going to be huge for Horton in terms of his physical development, strength, and quickness, and I think he's primed to come in, play big minutes, and be that true 3-and-D off-ball guard that will unlock so many options for this team next year.

- The praise surrounding Malik Ellison during his sit out year was more a symptom of being the most athletic guy on a really, really, really bad team than a signal of his ability to contribute in the ACC. I absolutely believe that Ellison was tearing it up against his teammates in practice. We saw every single opponent we played that year tear up his teammates during games, too.

Just watching Horton Youtube vids has me excited. He's a big kid and will definitely contribute quite a bit next year. Very excited about him.

It's still very confusing to me how he could become such a horrible 3PT shooter after sitting out a transfer year. He took almost 3 a game at St. John's and made 34%, which isn't horrible. He then shot 19% at Pitt and is shooting 14% now at Hartford. At least he's still attempting less than 1 a game.

Anyways, he's a double-double machine at Hartford. Happy to see him playing well. I don't think you could ever question his effort while a Panther.

I think he tried to change his shooting form and it was unsuccessful to say the least.

Yeah, I think he took the sit out year and the staff tried to tool around with his shooting form, it didn't take hold the way anyone thought it would in game action, Ellison lost all of his confidence shooting the ball, and that was kinda all she wrote. Tough situation - I think he was easily athletic enough to play in the ACC, but he just lost all of his confidence in shooting the basketball.

Just watched the show today and it was awesome to listen to Levance. That swagger he had then he still has. And I agree, Capel gets it and that is how this program will get back to where we were and better.

What a great listen / watch. It’s so refreshing to hear thoughtful commentary and discussion. I don’t think I heard a single cliche, coach speak, .. just a fun conversation. Great stuff

Indeed.

I like how Coach Capel will ask questions to guys like Levance and Dejuan about what made them pick Pitt, how they handled winning, and different things like that.

He always seems to be interested in learning their history and program history. It can only help him when pitching kids in the future.

I never used to care to listen to any coaches interview for any team I follow, in any sport. I can’t get enough of listening to the coach Capel show and I really enjoy listening to all of his pre and post game interviews.

Feel the same- I generally find coaches shows pretty uninteresting-

I could listen to Jeff Capel all day. Just really insightful and refreshing.

The program with Sam Clancy was probably the best radio I’ve heard on the Fan.

It was so good, that Sam was asked to be on the Starkey show the following afternoon. I stumbled across that show while in the car, and Sam was telling more great stories...

I think the local radio sports-talk shows would be so much better if they interviewed more local coaches and players, as well as former coaches and players...

Go Pitt.
