I just noticed this, I hadn't been paying attention to the bottom of the standings. I thought NC State was supposed to have decent talent, is Gottfried just that bad of a coach? Or maybe Barber, despite all the physical ability, is not really that good of a PG.

Robinson's critics have eased up lately, but probably because he has been scoring in double digits as much as anything. I know after a game opposing coaches toss out idle coachspeak compliments to the other team, but I think their comments about Robinson are pretty sincere.

I think NCS was the biggest underachiever in the ACC this year. They had way too much talent to have that miserable record.

Gottfried is that bad of a coach.

I'd argue that if you swapped rosters with Pitt... the teams would have the same records they do now. Jamie would get that roster to 9-7.... and our roster managed by Gottfried would be lucky to be 4-12.

I'll argue that Gottfried is worse than 4-12 with this roster. That guy is a bad bad coach. Based strictly on recruiting ratings, they are only surpassed by UNC and Duke in the ACC. He has a boat load of talent year on and year out. He falls into the same category as Leonard Hamilton and Lorenzo Romar. They can recruit talent but can't do anything with it.

Who's that talented on nc states roster beside cat barber?

I'd argue if you did a top 5 from both teams Pitt would have at least 3 maybe 4 of the 5.

It's tough to say though. Because I feel that Freeman and Anya would be better players at Pitt than they are at NCSU.

Barber and Abu destroyed us. They were the 2 best players on the court. We lost out on 4 guys to them, so they have more talent. Gottfried is simply not a good coach.

That was one game.
Abu, Anya, the Martin brothers, Rowan, Barber, Freeman.....

.... all high-rated recruits than most of Pitt's roster.... and some of those were players we were trying to recruit and lost out to Gottfried.

Based on "star" ratings... their roster has more talent than ours.

2015: Rowan - 4-star
2014: Abu, Martin, and Martin - all 4-stars
2013: Anya, Barber - 4-stars. Freeman - 3-star

That's six 4-stars and one 3-star in the past three years... all of which getting significant minutes.

For Pitt:

2015: Wilson - 4-star (who plays about 10 minutes per game)
2014: Luther, Johnson, Jeter - all 3-stars
2013: Young - 4-star. Artis - 3-star
2012: Robinson - 4-star. Jones - 3-star

That's three 4-stars and five 3-stars in the rotation.

NC State's recruiting has been much better than Pitt's.

They should be better than 4-12. But their coach sucks.

If JD had NC St's players, then we are a Top 20 team this year. JD would get blasted by people if he won 4 games in conference with that talent.

He'd get blasted if he ever only won 4 games in conference period... regardless of the talent.

They should be better than 4-12, no doubt. And I think Dixon would have them better than that if he was their coach.

But, your argument is flawed. I'm not going to debate the difference between 8 3 and 4 stars and 7 three and 4 stars the difference is negligible. And 4 of nc states higher ranked players are freshmen and sophomores. What I am going to do is repeat my statement from above. Pitt has the better players right now. At least 3 if you were doing a top 5.

I think both of you guys are correct here. On paper NC state has more talent but in actuality pitt has the better guys right now. If I was ranking the top 5 players between the two teams Id go
1. Barber
2. Abu
3. Artis
4. Young
5. James robinson

That being said Gottfried is an awful coach who struggles to develop his players. If jamie was nc states coach and had been able to coach up all those highly rated recruits the last couple years they would be a top 3-4 team in the conference imo

So is your point that JR is a better point guard then Cat Barber?

For as "awful" as Gottfried has been, he's certainly eaten our lunch a lot recently and been to the Sweet 16 2 of the past 4 seasons. That said, I agree that the Ano and Freeman types would absolutely be preforming at a higher level in a Pitt uniform under JD.

It's tough to say though. Because I feel that Freeman and Anya would be better players at Pitt than they are at NCSU.
Freeman and Anya would compliment Pitt's roster very well. Barber is a big time scorer but you often see teams with heavy volume scorers have bad records.

As far as Rowen goes he is very talented but if he was at Pitt he would not see the floor till be became a more complete team player. He could throw up threes at inopportune times but not very many till Jamie re-introduced him to the pine.

As a pure playmaking point guard James is much better. I don't see Cat Barber as a traditional point guard.
But he's fun to watch as a small SG!! James would make him even better, IMHO. We've been short of talent at that spot for a while.
