To my knowledge, CBS is the only "Big 4" American TV network which has never televised a soccer match. That's about to change.

CBS won the American TV rights for the Champions League but it looks like all but select games will only be available on $10/month CBS All Access. Turner did something similar but showed 2 games per session on TNT. Perhaps CBS will air 2 games per session on CBS or CBSSN.

According to wikipedia 1974 World Cup was on CBS.

You know that that news came out over three months ago, right?

We will eventually see where the games will be shown, but one reason they did the new contract that early was to show their complete displeasure with the way that Turner was handling the rights, so I really doubt the plan is for the games to mostly shown on their streaming service. Look for it to be more like it was when Fox had the rights and they showed games on FS1, FS2 and sometimes on the RSNs. Almost certainly CBS will at least show a game on CBSSN in every Champions League window in addition to games being shown on the main network.

Yea, I have been meaning to post it. I'd like to see them do with it like Fox did but CBS is trying to prop up their streaming service to compete with the others so I think you're going to see a very similar situation with Turner. 1-2 games Tuesday on CBSSN. 1-2 games Wednesday on CBSSN and the rest on CBS All-Access.

As I said, the reason that UEFA put the rights up for bid so early was to express their displeasure with how Turner is handling the rights. So it seems unlikely that they would have agreed to a new deal that gets them the exact same situation.

Additionally, if they actually did show 2 games on a Tuesday and a Wednesday in the group stages that would be one more than what Turner is doing, so even that would be something of an improvement. And I'll bet that part of the deal also includes showing Thursday Europa League games on CBSSN as well, which is something that Turner literally never does.

Turners coverage is terrible. But I can’t see CBS interrupting daytime over the air tv for soccer on Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s.

Can’t believe ESPN didn’t make this happen.

Can’t believe ESPN didn’t make this happen.

ESPN believes people are paying too much for these soccer properties. Its why they arent seriously bidding for them. I remember the CEO saying he doesn't know how FOX will make money on the World Cups and that was before Qatar was moved to Nov/Dec and the US didnt qualify in 2018.

As for CBS, yes, I doubt they will interrupt daytime TV. Maybe, maybe for the semis but I doubt it

But they’ve invested in Serie A and carry games on their networks. Maybe it’s not really an investment. Bit it’s more than what they do with the NHL. But between that and putting euro soccer on the ticker, I thought maybe they were starting to see value in soccer.

Do they do MLS? I don’t know because I don’t watch ESPN or MLS. And certain cup competitions are on their streaming platform. If Champions league is too expensive for their taste, they can do worse than airing the FA Cup or Carabao Cup. And the English Championship playoffs are awesome, which I believe I’ve watched on ESPN+.

ESPN and FOX did a joint bid for the USMNT/MLS package a few years ago. However, most of the value in that comes from the USMNT games. And the overall package is pretty cheap. MLS ratings are better but still comparable to the WNBA and Women's College World Series.

I'd imagine the American TV rights for Serie A were dirt cheap.

Watching my Blues now vs Bayern Munich and Alphonso Davies is FAST!

20 or 30 years ago there would be no chance at all. But today? Network daytime ratings are in the toilet, to the point that CBS doesn't really program daytime after 3:00. They would literally not have to bump any network programming to show weekday afternoon Champions League games.

Now that doesn't mean that they will definitely do that, just that they might. My guess is that they'd have to get buy in from the local stations, because the local stations currently make money on those time slots so they'd have to show them how they were going to make more (or at least the same) by showing Champions League games. But it also wouldn't be surprising if that was a part of what they offered to get the deal, some number of guaranteed time slots on the network.

That's interesting. So I guess its just syndicated stuff after 3. That works out perfectly actually. Do a "joint" pregame show on CBSSN then when the ball is kicked at 3:00, tell the viewers their game will be on CBS and the other will be on CBSSN.

It shouldn't be overly difficult to pre-empt locally syndicated programs once in awhile. However, maybe they dont do this until the later stages?

Interesting. The first World Cup I ever remember being on TV here was 1990. I'll never forget that. First time I ever saw soccer on TV.
You must not be old enough to remember the Pele craze in the '70s. NASL was on TV every week for a few years, I think ABC carried it, New York Cosmos with Pele was of course the hot team, they'd sell out Giants Stadium, while the other teams usually had like 10K fans, then around 1984 NASL folded.

Do they do MLS? I don’t know because I don’t watch ESPN or MLS.
MLS is on Fox, FS1 and ESPN, all season, probably every week there are 2-3 national broadcasts of MLS games. I actually enjoy it, I'm a DC United fan, even though they aren't great, I get some of their local broadcasts. I'm the opposite of many, I can't get excited about teams playing before noon in Europe. I like following a USA based league. Quality means less to me.

Do you forget that you’ve only said this on this site a few hundred times? Lol. We know.

Did you hear the LAFC owner say that MLS was going to overtake MLB and NHL within 10 years? I hate when people say this. It makes soccer people look ridiculous when 90% of us never say this type of thing.

Just like you've pointed out that you never watch MLS several hundred times. It amazes me that people watch baseball. I think I came to realize that I never liked it, and when the Pirates perpetually sucked, I realized then that I hate the sport as a whole and I think I only liked it because I was indoctrinated that it was an "American Passtime" I actually think people don't give soccer a chance mainly because they think it's un-American. But I agree soccer won't over take MLB anytime soon. NHL though, maybe.

I need to start following it. Soccer in the summer would help fill the void. I have always watched the MLS all star game vs a euro team in the summer and enjoyed that. I need to give it more of a try. I do like niche sports and even watch the XFL.

If they do it that would be my guess. Like this week on Tuesday they could have shown Chelsea - Bayern on CBS and Napoli - Barca on CBSSN, and on Wednesday they could have shown Real - Man City on CBS and Lyon - Juventus on CBSSN. Once they get to the knock out stages they are basically guaranteed at least one "big" game in every time slot. In the group stages there might not be games that would move the needle enough to warrant a game on CBS.

MLS is really not that bad, Actually some entertaining games, the LA vs. LA games last year where great, when the Galaxy had Zlatan, LAFC has Vela, This year Galaxy signed Chichirito. Atlanta is pretty good, Seattle, the NY teams and Philly, DC was getting better, Rooney bolted back to England so I don't know how they will be.

I also watch XFL, and honestly I prefer their rules to NFL already, especially the officiating and how they handle replay, and especially that replay is really rare and almost never happens compared to NFL with half the game becoming a mandatory review.

Honestly I watch my team play in Europe and I can completely understand why other people with no allegiance don’t “get it” or have a use for it. As far as MLS, I don’t know why I have a hard time getting into it. It doesn’t have anything to do with the quality of play.

Regarding the XFL, the level of play is a hindrance for me because the QB play has been so bad. But I do enjoy watching Houston and Dallas because of the QB’s. The entire sports world can learn from the XFL. Their transparent video review thing is perfect. We see exactly why the decision was made. In the EPL, VAR has been a complete disgrace. In the Chelsea vs Man U game last week, there were three VAR decisions (two goals taken away and one red card decision that directly impacted the game). All went against Chelsea and in Man U’s favor. Two of the three were baffling and no one (even Man U fans) could understand the decisions. The 3rd decision was understandable, as the Chelsea goal scorer’s toe was offside on a header he scored. By law, that was the right call...but after the first two wrong calls, it was a tough pill to swallow. Without VAR, that would have been a goal 100 out of 100 times, but again, technically it was the right call. But if the viewer were in the booth with the video ref, we would know how the decisions were made and there would be added accountability for the guy. As it turns out, the guy has not been assigned to any games, either on the field or in the video room since it happened. But maybe if the world was “in the booth with him”, maybe he makes the right decisions??? It reminds me of some of the baffling decisions made in the NFL with that Al Riveron idiot.

I kind of came into MLS on the ground floor. First year 1996, the local TV stations carried DC United, and I didn't even care much for soccer at the time, but I was hooked on it for the 1st 3-4 years, and DC won the first championship vs. LA. So I got bored with it for maybe a decade, then later when my daughter was born and eventually became a soccer player, I returned to watching DC and the MLS later, So I have a fairly long history of following it on and off. And an organically grown allegiance to DC United, since they have often been carried locally on my TV package. And I have gone to one game. It was actually at sold out RFK Stadium, vs. LA Galaxy in 2007 when Beckham made his USA debut, my nephews, also soccer players, they played high school in the Pittsburgh area (one of them was a walk on at Pitt for a season) asked me to get some tickets and we went. So you could say, I've been somewhat an established fan of MLS for awhile.

As for replay, the way the XFL is doing it is great, IMO you don't have to catch every toe that's a half inch off sides, just the super obvious stuff. If nobody can see it at full speed or without being zoomed in, or way far away from the play, let it go, I see XFL doing it the way it should be, guy in the booth sees something super obvious, then we watch him explain it in a minute or so and it's over, you don't need challenges or review of EVERY SCORE or EVERY TURNOVER, keep it to a minimum and only things that stick out like a sore thumb. And the thing I don't like about VAR in soccer is they sometimes are reviewing for an off sides, then they call something else, unrelated, like a red card :) ! LOL! it just gets to be too much BS IMO. like you said, if it's a goal 100 out of 100 times, what did we gain so much by "getting it right" because that pesky toe was an inch over the line.

Its hard because there's no team to root for and the soccer isnt good enough. I mean if Pittsburgh had a team, I'd be a diehard from Day 1. Season tickets, watch all the games, frequent the message boards, etc.

I tried to make myself a Galaxy fan when they had Beckham and Donovan and that worked a little bit but didnt last. Then, I tried to make myself an NYCFC fan when they came in but that lasted like 2 games. I might try to be a Columbus fan now with their new stadium coming and rebrand. They have Gyasi Zardes, who I like, and Im going to the game out there when we are there for the Nike Cup. I suspect that wont last either.

Yea but in the group stages, you are guaranteed to always have at least 1 superclub per time slot. But they may require 2.

Lol. I could have written this. I tried with the Galaxy and NYCFC with Lampard.

I think I’d have season tickets for a Pittsburgh team.

I’ll be at the Nike Cup too. My kids never ever played in the tourney. But this year I’ll be coaching a little team there.

I can't even tell that the soccer isn't good enough, because I can't attach myself to a team in a foreign city in order to watch more than a few minutes. Other than Olympiacos of Greece, but I have Yinzerlike connections that attach me to them.

I have my DVR programmed to record all Olympiacos games, those are the only Euro games I watch. Just watched them beat Arsenal 2-1 in Europa League this week. Awesome game, they scored at 119' of extra time to win the aggregate @ Arsenal. But I care so specifically about watching that team, that I watched it even though it was Spanish language. I could never care enough to watch an entire EPL game. I'm a total Yinzer, I just root for my own team to exclusion of all else. Except of course weird stuff like XFL. :)

Having a local team matters of course, like with DC United, I usually see a lot of their games, and you get to know who your players are and see the team progress or regress from week to week, you can start to "care".

Interesting. The first World Cup I ever remember being on TV here was 1990. I'll never forget that. First time I ever saw soccer on TV.

Wikipedia is wrong. Not for the first time. The 1974 World Cup was not shown on American TV. I know because I was going to law school in DC at the time and was upset that it wasn’t being shown. I knew someone who knew someone who worked at the BBC office in DC and was able to catch a number of games there in their feed from Britain. It wasn’t on the BBC in Britain but they had feeds from all of the major TV networks there. And they had a lot of soccer fans working there.

This was before the days of VHS but they copied the games on those big tape reels and you could go into a room and watch any game you wanted to before they copied over it, as long as you knew how to operate the equipment.

They all were astounded that American TV didn’t carry it, and I remember in the group stages they assumed the US would carry the knockout rounds. Nope. The semis? Nope. Surely the final? No again.

I saw Germany beat the Dutch Clockwork Orange 2-1 sitting in a room at the BBC with about 1,000 other people. Holland, with Johan Cruyff and Jonnie Repp, was the best team in the world for 8 years. Unfortunately, they had to play Germany in the 74 final in Germany and Argentina in the 78 final in Buenos Aires. The Dutch had perfected “total football” where every player except the goal keeper could play anywhere on the pitch and possession was the name of the game. They were a joy to watch. Like Barca were a decade ago.

According to Wikipedia (so you know that it's true), the first US broadcast of a World Cup game was on NBC in 1966, when they showed the Final on tape delay.

In 1970 ABC showed highlights on Wide World of Sports. In 1974 CBS showed highlights on CBS Sports Spectacular. And then games were on for every tournament starting in 1982. In '82 PBS and ESPN showed games, with ABC showing the Final. In 1986 NBC and ESPN showed games with NBC showing the Final.

"In 1982, PBS and ESPN provided the first thorough American television coverage of the FIFA World Cup. ABC aired the first live telecast of the final. ABC aired commercials during the live action. Meanwhile, PBS aired same day highlights of the top game of the day."

"1986 marked the first time that the World Cup had extensive live cable and network television coverage in the United States. ESPN carried most of the weekday matches while NBC did weekend games. To be more specific, NBC aired seven matches, including the "Hand of God" quarterfinal, with broadcasters on-site. NBC's theme music for their 1986 coverage was Herb Alpert's "1980", from his 1979 album Rise. It was originally a cue meant for the ill-fated 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics broadcasts. Meanwhile, ESPN aired about 25 matches that year, all with broadcasters in studio."

How about that Liverpool game yesterday? I was able to see the last 30 minutes. What a game! It had me wondering if that’s the last soccer game we will see for a while with that type of atmosphere.

Olympiacos, vs. Wolves today, with no fans, Europa League. Olympiacos owner, who also owns Nottingham Forrest in England has tested positive for coronavirus as well.

EPL still hasn’t shut down season. Everyone else has. But there’s been a couple players diagnosed with CV...I suspect they shut down by tomorrow. Hell, they postponed the arsenal game the other day because one of the players shock hands with the Greek owner.

I was in and out on in in the second half / extra time. Somehow I managed to see all the goals except the last one right at the death. That was nuts. In all the time I was watching Athleti had two even half chances (assuming you don't count the guy who was a mile and a half off sides at the end of regulation) and they buried them both. You don't see a team dominate a game like that and lose very often.

Liverpool had 34 shots!!! atL had 9 I think.

I saw the highlights of the game yesterday, @ Olympiacos / NO FANS, was Olympiacos 1 Wolves 1, it was weird, the place was dead silent, no fans, then when Oly scored they blasted the fight song over the loud speakers.
