Central Catholic's Rashad Wheeler, the second-ranked defensive tackle in Pennsylvania, announced Monday night that he plans to enroll at Pitt next year.
Wheeler (6-foot-4, 285 pounds) has offers from 11 Power 5 schools, including finalists West Virginia and Maryland. He is Pitt's ninth recruit in the Class of 2016, joining Central Catholic teammate Bricen Garner, a defensive back.
Wheeler, rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, plays defensive end at Central Catholic. He recorded 11 sacks last season but projects inside in college.
“He has all the physical tools,” Central Catholic coach Terry Totten said. “Very athletic, plays basketball. He also plays tight end and H-back.”
Central Catholic has several players who have attracted interest from Power 5 schools. Defensive back Damar Hamlin, who is uncommitted, visited Pitt's first practice Monday and talked to coach Pat Narduzzi.
Totten said the recruiting process hasn't bothered Wheeler.
“He's a very low-key kid. He's got a good mother who watches out for him,” Totten said. “This is all run-of-the-mill stuff for him.”
