Certainly seemed to always give great efforts, but I also think he was a part of the greater culture/attitude problems. What ever was going on with this team last year "under the covers", Champ seemed to leave in the dorm room. He came to play, and did so confidently. Go Champ!!
Maybe under JCs guidance his game developed !Capel was holding him back I believe

I’m rooting for him but I don’t think he’ll he drafted. There are a bunch of long, lean, Uber-athletic 6’5-8 guys who are also performing very well in these games. They will all be in the backcourt and on the wing at the next level. Champ also measured in at 6’6 and I think that’s gonna cost him being picked as he’s less suited to play on the wing than a lot of these guys. I am sure he will be invited to a bunch of camps about 30 seconds after the draft ends though.Seems to be performing very well. Thinking if he keeps this up he'll get snagged in the 2nd round.
This is the same thing I was going to typeIf he can hit some jumpers or 3’s more consistently , he has a chance.
Capel was holding him back I believe
He came right in and averaged 13 and 7 as a true freshman. I don’t think Capel gets a ton of credit for “developing” Champ, but to say Capel held him back is absolutely ridiculous. The truth on stuff like that is always somewhere between but I’d shade more to God-given talent than brilliant developmental coaching on that one.He went from 3 star, barely inside the top 250, to ACC POY candidate under Capel but go off, king
When people want to criticize and blame everything on the coach then he must be given the credit when something positive happens .He came right in and averaged 13 and 7 as a true freshman. I try to be objective both ways. When people want to criticize and blame everything on the coach then he must be given the credit when something positive happens .
There was no one , not even the experts on this board , who had any inkling of how good or ACC ready the #242 rated high school recruit was . Ultimately it’s the athlete whose blessed with natural ability and the desire to put the work in that determines his ceiling . I’m sure Justin worked hard and I’m sure the coaching staff had a helping hand in his development.I try to be objective both ways.
Only a fool would give Capel a ton of credit for Champ's development as a player.
Likewise, only a moron would say that Capel stunted him or held him back in some way.
Reality always lies between. I think it's fair to say Capel did a nice job bringing along a player who came into the program physically and mentally ready to be an ACC-level starter. Now if Will Jeffress ends up becoming a stud, I'll give Capel a lot of credit for that, because he very clearly was not ready for this level of play coming out of HS.
Same kind of thing with any of the Pitt football coaching staffs Aaron Donald played under trying to claim credit for his success. He would have dominated at any program in the country. He's a once in a decade combo of talent, competitive drive and work ethic, all of which he had well before he ever set foot on PItt's campus. Wanny and his staff do deserve credit for seeing that he was a beast from jump street and making him an offer. A Patrick Jones, on the other hand, I think Duzzi and his staff deserve a ton of credit for developing him into a NFL draft pick at DE.
OF course you do.Capel was holding him back I believe
That would be positive....so not a chance....at least on this board.......Maybe under JCs guidance his game developed !
most national articles on the combine didnt list him as one of the top 5 or 10 for improving draft stock. nice local article but still dont think he gets drafted.
Still not seeing him on anybody’s updated mock draft board. I’d say “cemented into round 2 at worst” is a quote from someone else go doesn’t know what he’s talking about.FWIW, the guy at the Athletic wrote about Champagnie in his draft combine article in the "players who helped their stock" section. Without giving away everything he said (which wasn't a whole lot, but I think that if someone wants to read something from a pay site they should, you know, pay for the site), the money quote is "Nonetheless, one has to think Champagnie cemented himself in Round 2 at worst."
He also has subpar athleticism for an NBA wing. That was borne out by his combine measurables.Champ's 2 deficiencies were: 1) his outside shooting and 2) his defense (where he was lax at times). Not much JC could do about these 2 areas. The only way his shooting improves is to practice, practice, practice. Defense? That, too, is largely on the player. And it's these 2 areas that have me doubting Champ is NBA material. Hopefully, he proves me wrong, but I see him more as a fringe guy who will likely wind up making his money outside the U.S.
Indeed! There was no one , not even the experts on this board , who had any inkling of how good or ACC ready the #242 rated high school recruit was . kudos to both !
a quote from someone else go doesn’t know what he’s talking about
Fair enough. We will know soon whether Hollinger is a Champstrodamus or whether all the other guys that have Champ in the 75-85 range and outside the draft field are right.Well the person who wrote it was John Hollinger, and he knows a lot more about basketball and the NBA than probably just about every writer who does mock drafts for anyone else.
Which, of course, does not mean that there is some sort of guarantee that Champagnie gets drafted. It's just one opinion. But it is a knowledgeable opinion, not just that of some random guy who makes lists for a random web site.
He has been a very productive player at a very high level of college basketball. That should count for a lot more than it seems to anymore.
