Change to Retro Colors Official?

I didn’t want to create a new thread for this now that we’re in football season mode, but this caught my attention.



@bwh05 I know you’ve talked about the switch to the old colors and how they’ll parallel the Marino era colors, how about this? Look at the script in the new barbershop and how dark the blue and gold is. Could think be a leak?

Judging by some of the Olympic sports twitter accounts, the colors for that barbershop do appear to be in line with some of the other items rolled out across the department:

The switch is definitely happening, it’s just it’s not quite the colors we wore when we rolled out or first throwbacks. We’ve had so many versions it’s hard to keep them all straight. If I could get a picture to post I’d try to show you what I think is the closest. The blue reminds me of early 80s. The gold is more orange and less mustard.

Amen. They’re not a carbon copy of what they wore in the past, but I love them. I think they look as good as, if not better, than the past ones. However, I do wish a few minor things were different, such as the pant stripes matching the ones we used to wear. Middle strip a little too small.

Would you add a yellow face mask, or add stripes to the jersey, if given the chance?

I like them too. Maybe I’d change my mind once seeing them, but right now I think the only change I would make is shoulder stripes on the jerseys. Basically the same uniforms as in our heyday but with this brighter color scheme.

I like the royal blue. That’s blue to me. Before it was almost blackish and the retries last year looked more aqua blue. This is blue. Royal blue. I like it.

All the different varied colors, fonts, patterns, graphics... sheesh. It seems worse not better.

Also, these pictures underscore the burden of all these different programs and sports that mostly cannot subsist on their own. Even all these banners and wall graphics don't come free (though sometimes they look somewhat amateurish ). Hopefully some of the Nike proceeds help with this stuff.

Emphasizes the heavy load on the shoulders of the football and basketball programs to carrythe freight (and why winning would be more than just a shallow ego boost).

so im a tad confused here (yeah, go figure), they are rolling out the new color scheme, it looks to be the blue and yellow from the late 80's, early 90's under the Hackett era, we have graphics and banners all up in our sports facilities, so when do they change the uniforms? I mean, these new blue and yellows are far different than the color scheme of our unis, even our retros to be honest.

I’ve seen references on this board to some kind of agreement with Nike where Pitt was obligated to use the navy uniforms with the “cathedral font” (which I hope sticks around with new uniforms/colors) that they revealed in early 2016 for three full seasons - that commitment would end after the 2018-2019 school year, with presumably a reveal of the new colors and uniforms coming before the 2019 season.

I would guess that the athletic department has decided that it’s wiser to use the new colors when installing graphics, etc. around the facilities rather than use the current colors and swap them out in under a year.

We aren’t going to redo things in retro colors in a year so anything we’ve done this summer is already in retro. The basketball court will change when we flip the camera

I like the royal blue. That’s blue to me. Before it was almost blackish and the retries last year looked more aqua blue. This is blue. Royal blue. I like it.

That is NOT royal blue.
Royal Blue is nearly purple...check w your local Sherwin Williams store

It all looks like the bright colors to me. The darker look is just different lighting, rendering, etc. I prefer the Dorsett-Marino colors but these are fine and a vast improvement over the past 20 years.

It's definitely not an opinion many share, but I liked these uniforms a lot. If they took these as a base and tweeked the colors to match the late 70s I think you end up with a uniform that pleases the vast majority of fans. These "standard" uniforms are already pretty darn close to the style of the throwbacks we've had recently. Adding a sleeve stripe might be the only other change I'd make, but I also don't think it's necessary.

The style of these unis were actually pretty good. When they added the script they looked great. The only thing that needed changed where the colors. Just one change is all that had to be made. So what did they do? Kept the colors and changed to an ugly uniform, of course. That's Pitt for ya!

I could quibble on shades as we all could but this looks more like "Pitt sports" than anything .. after 1977 or so anyway.

Saying the retros aren’t our uniforms is being a little dramatic.

The basic design is absolutely the heyday. The colors are the late 80s and early 90s. Those are not the heyday, but they had a good run of being worn.

I don’t like the YSU game throwbacks. Too drab for current day and too much losing in the mid 90s ruined them even more.

I would like to see a slightly less bright blue and a slightly less bright yellow (but still POP on HDTV and at the stadium)

No word yet, but you take the photo above, add the Aleve stripes from our current primaries on the sleeves and keep the tv numbers on the shoulders like our primaries and I say we are golden for the forseable future.

These do look like the colors of the signage posts earlier. I do feel the blue we use for retros now will be a bit darker and the yellow we use now be a little more "Heinz field seat/steeler" yellow. Which I wouldn't mind it would blend Pitt more into the Heinz field atmosphere.
