cap'n it was a magical era. it was so novel for a town that never enjoyed such success. fans were innocents then.we had hero's and their clay feet weren't readily apparent..,

Sure. The city now is horrible in comparison to the glory years.

The city is??

I don't have to tell u the accolades the modern day city gets for its appearance, culture, livability, and yes the education and medical center associated with PITT. Just use the old google.

But make no mistake, there is a strong tie to the Steelers of the 70s as the springboard. So while the steel industry had been declining, it set the stage for it being a place for rebirth in the coming decades.

I watched Pirates against the Yanks this weekend on New York tv broadcasts. The Yankee announcers raved on about how beautiful PNC Park is and what a picturesque setting. I have to say that watching on tv the setting was terrific. Michael Kay, one of the announcers, is married to a Pittsburgh woman and so the did a tour of Pittsburgh, some of which included Oakland and the campus area. He made particular mention of how beautiful he thought the Pitt campus is.

I think I will take all the new restaraunts,Buildings,Clean Air,Clean Water and safety compare to the 70s. I love our campus a lot more too even without the stadium.

I will gladly take now compared to 1970s.

Hell no! Everything is TOO clean and TOO safe now, I miss those times.

I think things are mostly better locally with one exception... downtown retail. I guess true of many urban downtowns but nearly a ghosttown in that regard for Pittsburgh. I used to work downtown till about 15 years ago ... not Blondie Bumstead or anything but made use of lunchtime and after work to do holiday and birthday shopping. There were loads of good options of department and specialty stores. Now I think there aren't ANY as far as I know. One side downtown still seems active for "culture" and they are fighting the fight with Market Square. And i know more are living down town. But the rest seems DOA.

Outside of a handful of very large cities, Downtown as the center of retail is a thing of the past. Downtowns exploded as retail centers with the rise of the streetcar, and other forms of public transit, which made downtown accessible from most parts of the then very dense, and fairly close in metros of most cities. As cars became more common, ridership began a long slow decline. Fewer riders equals less frequent service, not to mention the fact that transit is less efficient serving far flung suburbs. People don't want to be bothered with the hassle and expense of trying to park downtown either, plus many downtowns gained reputations of being unsafe.
