CLARION!.......

Wentzel was terrible. He completely quit after the second period. Totally gassed too. Almost looked like he puked immediately after the match too. Not sure though. Just how ut looked to me.

Point 2: These are the worst announcers ever. Im mean, EVER. They sound like two random fans mic'd up in the stands.

Actually the color commentator was Pitt alum, former All American and legendary Clarion HD Coach Bob Bubb. He led the Eagles to prominence in the 1970's made them a powerhouse with three time NCAA champ Wade Schalles and his sidekicks Don Rohn and Bill Simpson, also NC. Gary Barton also won a NC for Clarion in '72. You'll find a picture of Bob Bubb in the Pitt wrestling room. Having said that, you are right, his commentary was lacking. I imagine he was a much better coach.

Re: Wentzel, I also thought he ran right off the mat to a garbage can to puke. Clarion was missing four or five starters.

Those 70S teams also had Geno Morelli's dad Pete ( Great guy) on the team with Schalles.
Bob Bubb was coach in my high school in the 60’s - Tyrone high school. Couple of friends wrestled for him were State Champs. Left Tyrone to go to Clarian I think. Got to see Schalles wrestle many times in Districs and regionals. Back then there only was one state champian at each weight class. No aa or aaa separate state champs.

As for the announcers, if you watched the match on the Internet, think it may have been two students doing the announcing. I thought Coach Bubb and former SID Herman are only heard on the radio broadcast.

He wrestled with the flu.

That would make sense. Did he have to wrestle, then? No one else at 165?

I think it was one of those things where you think you’re not feeling that bad and it gets worse in a hurry. Tried to tough it out, but probably didn’t end up being the best idea in the end.

Schalles state championship over future Pitt Panther John Chatman was a classic match. Chatman got a takedown and was placing Schalles on his back. Schalles used Chatmans own momentum used his legs to elevate Chatman and rolled him over for a first period pin. You can watch that on YouTube.

I watched on the net and it was Bubb.
