There really is no excuse for this. Even if the plan is to hit the grad market hard, it makes no sense not to try and build a young foundation — or at the very least try to hit on another Champagnie or Hugley.0 Recruits in the 2022 Class

This program has no foundation. It’s a house built out of cards.

Portal Recruit: "So Coach how do I fit in............"The fewer HS players he has signed, the more attractive Pitt is to transfers since they won't have to compete with "Capel's guys" for playing time.
Yeah maybe so, but you can’t have 10 transfers a year. I mean, there are 365 days in the year and 4 full-time coaches. They couldn’t have landed a single HS player?Capel has 1 year left. It really doesn't make a ton of sense for him to bring in guys who wont help the team win games in 2022-23. I’m not against signing talented HS players , but for whatever reason going all the way back to JDs last few yrs signing the guys you targeted as priorities just hasn’t been very successful for Pitt . They’re constantly in the top 5 of these kids , but lose out to what us Pitt fans seem to be lessor programs .Yeah maybe so, but you can’t have 10 transfers a year. My counterpoint to that would be that Capel actually signed a number of players who were immediate contributors as freshmen…Its just going to be tough for Pitt to sign impactful freshman until they become more relevant.
Mo and Burton vs Jeffress and Collier ….no contest .

Well, in terms of improving the program immediately the portal seems to be a good option. But the larger problem is that if one cannot impress/attract H.S. players to an ACC school on a consistent basis, how will you do with portal players that have the entire process already figured out. This scenario sets the ceiling at Burton and Mo type players, IMHO.Those who say the foundation of a good team is the high school players are 100% correct
Wasn’t this the year Capel was focusing on? Were we not told to “expect” a big high school haul?Well, in terms of improving the program immediately the portal seems to be a good option. I agree with your opinion, problem is I don't think Capel does. About a week or so ago I heard him on the pre-game show pretty much say rosters were going to change year by year from here on. I really think he is going to emphasize the transfer portal (if he stays) until he can turn the program around. Maybe he doesn't want to deal with all the handlers of high school kids anymore? Those who say the foundation of a good team is the high school players are 100% correct. That has to be the emphasis and focus, not transfers. Transfers should just be used to fill holes, and not many of them.
Capel's downfall is his total lack of recruiting these top high school kids, or any high school players. If he does get a top talent to commit, the kid abruptly changes his mind and de-commits. There's a reason for that, but Capel can't look in the mirror and see it.

What happens if Hugley leaves? I just feel he leaves after this year if for no other reason to go to Europe and start making money. I do not watch the NBA close enough to know if he can make it there, but a guy his size should be at least able to make a roster.
I know Capel brought in Burton and Gueye but going the transfer route is too risky for me.
He is not good enough to make an NBA roster at this point. NBA rosters have some of the greatest athletes in the world and there are guys his size, albeit not as heavy as him, playing the 3 and 4.What happens if Hugley leaves? This doesn’t make sense. The hope with bringing him back is he turns it around and can win moving forward….
If you’re sure he has 1 more year left, fire him now.
Otherwise we’re just going to be a mediocre team next year and then right back to the cellar without any strong HS player foundation.
Does everyone at least agree with this?If Hugley leaves, you have to fire Capel. Only because there would be no point in going through the motions of another hopeless season, which he would certainly be fired after. We would suck next year so you might as well start the rebuild with whoever coach wins the CAA Tournament.

What happened?
We are 7 and 11 going on our 4th straight losing season. We aren’t good. What is the plan for when we lose the few good players that we do have?
The issue isn’t that he’s not trying to get HS kids , they’re just opting for other programs. Signing a high schooler whose a major project makes no sense right now he needs immediate help next season . The masses are getting impatient. My counterpoint to that would be that Capel actually signed a number of players who were immediate contributors as freshmen…
X
McGowens
Toney
Champagnie
Hugley (obviously he didn’t really get much of a freshman year)
They landed most of these guys without huge recruiting battles.
Sorry, but this strategy of punting on HS talent is a great way to remain stuck in the mud and never develop a culture.
I mean Ralph Willard was a dead man walking his last season and he still managed to get Brandin Knight to commit.
