USC is by far the plum coaching vacancy this offseason, or would have been. Interesting they hire the interim coach who did fairly well.'

A lot of people thought Chip Kelly would end up here. Here is the problem with hiring Chip Kelly. He is still coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles season doesn't end until January 3rd. Meaning he likely is still coach there until at least January 4th. Meaning likely wouldn't be able to be hired until January 5th.

So then he would have ONE MONTH to put together a staff and salvage a recruiting class. That is tough for anyone. We saw what it was like when we hired Left Lane Hammer Down in January, the recruiting class was a mess.

I do think Kelly will end up back in college. But there might be a year gap. Unless the Eagles flat out fire him sooner.

With the Georgia job now open, I think this now puts some hold on say Tom Herman going to South Carolina or something like that. Georgia is a great job. Could be someone like Miss State's Dan Mullen who is in an unwinnable situation at Miss State, despite doing a great job (incidentally this was the guy PSU missed on).

Having one recruiting class not come together as planned is more than worth it if you are 100 percent sure that Chip Kelly is coming to town. My guess is that they had a discussion and determined it wasn't going to work out.

Georgia needs a great hire after getting rid of Richt, who would be a great fit for South Carolina.

Herman would be crazy to stay at Houston with all these jobs open. Honestly, if I'm Dana Holgorsen, I look at taking the Houston job if Herman leaves. He's from Texas and was the OC there in the Case Keenum days. Holgy has done a good job at WVU but not nearly good enough for their fans unrealistic expectations. If they beat KST Saturday, they will finish 8-4 and 5th in a loaded Big 12 with their only losses to the 4 big dogs in front of them (3 on the road). All that and he's one bad year from unemployment and with the uncertainty of a new AD who didnt hire him.

Dont be surprised if Holgy looks seriously at Houston if it comes open. Its a great stepping stone job and he can parlay that into a better Big 12 job eventually.

So he should step DOWN to maybe later step UP??? Illogical. Totally.

Herman might wait another season to see what happens at Texas. Strong is on the hot seat next season. He's making a critical hire in a couple of weeks -- an offensive coordinator. If it fails, Charlie will be on the unemployment line.

IW onder how many teams jumped the gun on hiring too quickly out of fear of not getting a good guy. Would VT for example have a better shot at a bigger name id they waited just a little bit longer? I knew the AD would jump fast, but with a guy like Richt available now.

I don't understand why USC would hire their assistant so quickly. Was he going somewhere in the next couple of weeks while they interview some other candidates? What's the hurry? Maybe he'll be a good coach, we'll see. Just seemed rushed considering nobody else was after him.

Haden has had some health problems, beating UCLA was pretty good, so to avoid a longer drawn out process, stick with the Staff that has been there and recruiting kept in place and going higher now!

I don't think PSU missed on Dan Mullen. I just can't think of any reason he would want to go there over Miss State. His salary is competitive at MSU. He wins more than enough to stay in the good graces with the fanbase. I don't see the incentive to jump ship to a job where there are scholarship restrictions and some dysfunctional Paterno supporters that want to hang on to the past.

"TD_6082, post: 579428, member: 510"]If Holgy got canned down the road, he could probably take a job similar to Houston at that time and have some Hoopie buyout money in his bank account.
My judgment for Holgrosen is now how he does against Bill Snyder that has a terrible year, but KSU Snyder knows how to coach too? WVU should win by how they are playing and have gone to a great Power Run Game, after taking 5 years to realize they can't keep up with Great Passing Teams Coaches at TCU & Baylor, then deal with OKSU & OU Run and Pass, and in the future Texas, KSU, and Texas Tech on rebuilding. WVU should be way better this game and next year if they have developed that Power Running Game! If not, Holgrosen will make a Great OC again somewhere or at a Non-Power Conference! WVU is fun to watch win or losing!

His wife is from Pittsburgh, and I think they could come North in the future. Rutgers and Maryland would be another Rebuilding Challenge like Missy State. But Missy State Athletic Director will also be formidable to pay and retain Mullens. UVA would not be be good fit for him. I am surprised Miami did not consider him so far? In any event, he will go up in salary no matter if he stays or goes. I thought VT would get him too!
