USC is by far the plum coaching vacancy this offseason, or would have been. Interesting they hire the interim coach who did fairly well.'
A lot of people thought Chip Kelly would end up here. Here is the problem with hiring Chip Kelly. He is still coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles season doesn't end until January 3rd. Meaning he likely is still coach there until at least January 4th. Meaning likely wouldn't be able to be hired until January 5th.
So then he would have ONE MONTH to put together a staff and salvage a recruiting class. That is tough for anyone. We saw what it was like when we hired Left Lane Hammer Down in January, the recruiting class was a mess.
I do think Kelly will end up back in college. But there might be a year gap. Unless the Eagles flat out fire him sooner.
With the Georgia job now open, I think this now puts some hold on say Tom Herman going to South Carolina or something like that. Georgia is a great job. Could be someone like Miss State's Dan Mullen who is in an unwinnable situation at Miss State, despite doing a great job (incidentally this was the guy PSU missed on).
