** I will put about as much effort into the edition as the Panthers put into this game today.

** Plain and simply, that was the worst Panther Hoops performance since a different guy was head coach.

** And even if it's not quite fair to say the effort wasn't there, it's completely fair to assert that there was absolutely no focus whatsoever. None.

** Our guys either didn't know what to do out on the court today, or just didn't care to follow any kind of a plan.

** I could go further into detail, but you all saw it too. The first half was bad. The second half was worse. So why go through it again?

** So if Coach Capel is coaching this season to keep his job, for his sake his team better not have any more games close to as bad as this one was. If they do, any decisions about Capel's future won't be very difficult.

DT, you said it all. No use in beating a dead horse or re-hashing such a dreadful performance by the players and the coaches. There were no highlights by our Panthers. It's sad and disappointing. I hope we're not reverting back to the days when we regularly got blown out every game like we were tonight.

Our guys either didn't know what to do out on the court today, or just didn't care to follow any kind of a plan.
Early on, I just felt Clemson was too athletic, Clemson defended Hugley about as well as we have seen in a while, eventually getting him to take bad shots. It was not like there wasn't a plan early, but Clemson had the athletes to defend and score consistently.

We just don't have the athletes to compete against most other teams in the ACC. Or maybe it's just a total lack of any kind of cohesive, competent game plan and the coaches aren't giving them anything to work with. It's almost like they didn't prepare for this game for one minute.

DT, you're clearly frustrated,
but your post says it all.

A fair comment, but we have executed offensively against teams as athletic as Clemson this year. And regardless, it was the defensive execution that was even worse.

We're never going to beat Clemson or NC State. I feel much better about UNC, Miami, FSU, etc than either of those. This was probably the game I was least confident about besides that 1st UVa game.

On a positive note, Top 75 recruit Will Jeffress made 1 basket and brought his FG% up to an even 30%. Scouts from RMU, SFPA, Gannon, and Mercyhurst (where his dad teaches) are drooling.

Clemsons starters went 11/15 from 3 that’s 73.3% call it poor defense or just an ridiculous night of shooting your going to get crushed .

Pitt just can’t match that production even on its best night .

It‘s not rocket science , neutralize Big John and you’ll win .

It’s going to be rough sledding from here without Horton , there’s is no one consistent enough from 3 to make anyone even think about how to defend Pitt .

Amen, brother.
Before tonight, I thought they were making strides
At least becoming all they could be.
But this was really bad.
Seen this too many times in JC's tenure
3 thoughts;
Femi may be the dumbest pg to wear a Pitt jersey
Jeffress has made no progress. Does he have even 1 offensive move?
Play Santos. At least he can shoot.

I don't mind playing Santos, but do realize that he's shooting 34.8% from the floor and 26.3% from three. Against non-Towson opponents, he is shooting 20% from three (6-30).

Capel is a dead man walking. Everyone knows it. This program is a train wreck with absolutely no help on the way. The ONLY reason Capel comes back for another season is that HL foolishly extended his contract and we probably don't want to eat the buyout right now.

And what's Jeffress shooting? Does he even try to score inside at all? All he does is take one 3 point shot per game pretty much and it usually misses. Worthless on the court.

Shooters need minutes to get comfortable

Again, I'm fine with giving him more of a try. But I don't think he's any kind of a quick answer. Or more specifically, I don't think he's the shooter we kind of hope that he is.

I’d have to agree with you , if he was knocking them down in practice I’m sure he’d be seeing more PT .

The only solutions Pitt has are suspended and injured !

The trouble is, he's such a defensive liability right now, we could barely afford to play him if he were actually making some shots, let alone sacrifice a lot of points defensively in those minutes while he's "getting comfortable"...

The reason he's not seeing the floor is his inability to contribute when he's not scoring. On the other side of this argument is Jeffers - who is also having an awful time shooting. But at least he can play defense and rebound, which keeps him on the floor. And, by the way, all that time on the floor doesn't seem to be helping Jeffers get any more comfortable with his shooting.

I have no idea if Jeffress can shoot , but right now he’s like a golfer with the yips . It’s in his head .

I fear he may be the second coming of joey David. Decent player they never quite became an impact player.

But he's just a freshman. The expectations are out of line

Early in the season, I thought Jeffress just needed to take a quarter of a second more to gather. He was slightly rushed.

Now, he is playing with absolutely zero confidence.

Offensively, this has pretty much become a 1 dimensional team. Every opponent knows it. They are like a football team that averages 50 yards (or less) passing a game and the D consistently puts 8 in the box to stop the run. They just have NO answers on offense. In many games (like yesterday) the team is pretty much devoid of finishers after JH. There are some combinations on the floor when only maybe 2 guys even have the remotest of likelihoods of being able to score at all.

So when the focus (you’re exactly right: there was NONE) and effort on D aren’t there either, well . . . . .

After the would-be tying 3 was reversed, the team REALLY sagged. Clemson saw it and smelled the blood in the water. From that point the rout was on. Just awful to watch.

Joey Ada I’d was to slow for this level. Saw him with a quarter court lead get caught from behind.

That pretty well sums
it up.

This a quote from Jeff Capel after the game:
“They were very physical,” Capel said. “They pinched the floor, they didn’t guard some guys for us, and they had a lot of help side. And they pressured the basketball.”

When there are players on the floor that the other team doesn't even bother to guard, the ones they are guarding are going to have a HELLUVA time.

The solution is more quantity of players that have more quality, talent and skill, in addition to the requisite size, speed, strength and athleticism to compete reasonably at this level of CBB.

But for a while now, Pitt hasn't been getting those players. Until they do - and it really needs to happen by next season - there appears to be little hope for anything close to the needed improvement.

Absolutely

Even if they gave Pitt Hugley’s 3 Clemson’s starters made 11/15 3 pointers , no way Pitt can hang with any team that shoots that effectively .
Of course not. But yesterday it looked like that particular play helped to crack the eggshell thin fragile psyche of this team. Should that happen? NO.

But generally speaking, you’re absolutely right. The 3 point shooting gap and differential has been kryptonite for this team all year. Since the very first game vs The Citadel.

Math don’t lie. For every 2 3-pointers the other guys make, a poor 3-point shooting team like Pitt has to make 3 2-pointers just to keep even. So it can be a tremendous deficit to try to keep up. I bet Buddy Boeheim can’t wait for Tuesday. 😏

Imagine if we would have played him more yesterday. We might have lost by 28 or 29!

:p

I feel the same way about Payton.

He played 3 minutes straight yesterday. Clemson’s lead swelled, but in that three minutes he helped create a turnover, had an assist and garnered a rebound.

Late in the game he hit a meaningless three.

Give this kid a shot. There really is nothing to lose. He appears, quicker and more athletic than Jeffress or Oladapo.
Also consider we are playing a former walk on a ton And you know how I feel about Collier.

Maybe he could be one of our best five players.

Probably will never happen. We seem content waiting on Godot (Horton).

Payton is totally lost on defense and offense .
Holy crap he got plenty of run / he’s not worth playing

32 minutes total - Plenty of run - He did have that big 6 minutes played game (Our last game)

Problem is there are no "quick answers" here.
Burton and Gueye improved and are now useful parts
Santos needs time to develop. Most frosh do
But he's the only healthy player with a nice stroke
When he got minutes he also rebounded and was active around the basket
I'd play him
