Plan on making trip for the Clemson game. Have not been up to that part of the state since I was active duty in the Air Force in Charleston. Never been there during a game day however. Staying in Greenville. Is tailgating possible for the visitors, I think there are buses that run from town, but we would prefer to get the whole experience. Also thoughts on bars, restaurants in Greenville will be near airport, thoughts on going into Clemson Friday to check out campus. Looking forward to the whole experience hope the Tigers are overlooking us and we can keep it close. At my age never know if I will be able to make the trip next time it rolls around.

Tailgating is possible for visitors. However, you will have to get there early (I mean early) to get a spot. Typically the golf course is a good spot.

Visitors can tailgate at Clemson. There are areas you can buy a space on game day for like $10-$20, as long as you're comfortable walking about a mile to the stadium. Look on a map near the intersection of Perimeter Road and Anderson Highway. As you drive from that intersection west on Perimeter Road there will be several grass lots with gameday parking, up until you hit the golf course like the prior poster said.

Downtown Greenville is great, but it's not close to the airport if that's where you're staying. It is the only city in the upstate with any real charm. I'm a big fan of the lazy goat and Blue Ridge brewing. Granted, I don't get to Greenville much anymore except when visiting my parents who still live there. It's pretty small so you can always just walk around downtown and look at the menus of the various restaurants. There's usually free parking in downtown Greenville in a garage on Richardson street, which is right near Main Street.

Re: going to Clemson's campus on Friday night -- are you staying in Clemson that night? If not, I wouldn't drive down Friday and then drive back. It's about a 45 minute drive from Greenville. Just head down super early on Saturday. If it's a noon game, plan on staying afterwards. People will be tailgating all day and you will likely find that if you're wearing Pitt gear you will be offered drinks and food by many tailgaters as you walk around.

Clemson fans are some of the nicest fans around. You will have a gateway experience no matter what.

A lot of good parking passes near stadium on stubhub. Pricey but should be worth it

if staying in greenville, how far in advance would you suggest leaving for the game? if a noon game, what time? if a 3:30 game, what time?

with traffic and all i have no idea how long is the trip for someone who has never been to clemson before. also have no idea where i'll be parking.

I can't speak confidently when it comes to how early the gameday-available lots fill up, but if it were me I wouldn't leave Greenville any later than 8. For gameday parking you're probably better off taking I-85 rather than Highway 123. Taking I-85 means you'll be coming in from Anderson Highway, which puts you on the side of campus with most of the gameday available parking. If you do take Highway 123, exit at Hwy 93 and then turn left on Anderson Highway. You don't want to head into campus on Hwy 93 because you'll just be surrounded by reserved parking lots and you'll have a hard time getting out of that area.

For a 3:30 game, the answer isn't much different -- maybe a couple hours later -- because everyone else will still leave around the same time in the AM and then they'll just tailgate more.

There is one negative thing I guarantee you will remember from your trip to Clemson: how godawful it is getting in and out of there. It's a sleepy town of about 10,000 people stuffed with 50,000 extra cars on gamedays.

The upside of buying your parking on gameday is that your lot will be so far away from the stadium that you'll get out of Clemson faster than everyone who is parked near the stadium.
