Brought it up at breakfast that, while discussing the game, some PSU fans were crediting Pitt's win to the officiating (I realize that some are always looking to discredit Pitt in anyway they can). One response was 'yeah, the ACC officials would not want Clemson in the cfb playoff, lol.' Think about that. Why would any officiating crew associated with the ACC intentionally give any breaks to Pitt? Sure, officials are supposed to be unbiased, but each fanbase thinks they get screwed at times. My OSU buddy said that PSU fans are always complaining about B1G officials, after all that is how OSU beat them a couple of years ago (tic). Moral of the story, fans are biased and they see officiating through their own eyes, as do coaches. Every game has some calls that impact the game at the time. But, Clemson had many chances to win that game, and Pitt fought them off, fought adversity, and won. Kudos to the Panthers, they showed character, toughness, and resolve.

I thought the officiating was bad all around. Pitt certainly got breaks that helped them win. But bad calls also went against Pitt that helped Clemson. It doesn't surprise me that PSU fans want to point to bad officiating. Our win screws their narrative that we got lucky when we beat them. Our win shows that we didn't get lucky and that perhaps it was them who got lucky when they beat tOSU.

Figured the win would poke some staters. Some Clemsonites are bitching the head ref is from South Carolina.

Frankly, I've thought the ACC officiating has been terrible all season. There were definitely some suspect calls both ways, but Clemson fans have a legitimate gripe about that one pass interference called on them on third down.

That being said, there is going to be at least one really bad call in every game, in most cases you should shut your mouth and play through it. (which btw, Clemson did)

have any of the PED state fans seen the officiating at there games???? i have seen numerous out of bounds hits and holding and no penalty called. give me a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IMO, the Whitehead overturn, they didn't have any video that by rule justified them to overturn it, that it took so long highlighted that they were looking hard for something to legitimize it, and in the end they just did the dirt. But, that wasn't the on field crew that was conference HQ.

Other than that, you add up the bad calls that went each way and I felt it was net negative to Clemson.

But, things are so god awful with the refs now there is a team getting the short end of the stick EVERY game, and Pitt has had more than its share of calls since it has come into the league where the refs have leaned to the long standing universities, so they had one coming as far as I a concerned.

Clemson has been all class, and it looks as though they still are going to be OK as long as they take care of business.

The officiating in the first half was so anti-pitt I almost left the stadium. After the Whitehead touchdown, the out of bounds receiver, the hold they called on a big first down that made us have to punt... it seemed really obvious the refs didnt want Pitt to win. In the second half things evened a little bit, but still, Clemson certainly had more breaks. You could seriously say alot of points changed hands in favor of Clemson

I'll go back to the day when Pitt was officially accepted into the ACC:

We got nice posts from fans representing practically every team in the ACC - congratulating Pitt and welcoming Pitt into the ACC. But was particularly interesting is that some of the posters also prepared us - even warned us - about the ACC officiating.

Those fans got it right: every team in the ACC gets shafted at one time or another. It's not "bias"...it's incompetence.

Really, was there any more bias than what we experienced in the Big East, when the Big East officials tried their best to steal the 13-9 game away from Pitt -- so that WVU might play in the bowl that determined the MNC of that season?

The officiating this season has been bad overall. Even though there are the same number of officials as an NFL game there seems to be less accuracy....IMO

Hey, we've had our share of bad calls that have screwed us. It was nice to get some favorable calls our way. I'm not going to lose sleep over it. That is not what won or lost the game.

How about the terrible pass interference on 3rd and 26 for Clemson the series after the inconclusive yet somehow conclusive 14 pt turnaround.

It was tied at 14 and it kept clemson's drive going and led to td. you have these in every game. the acc officials are an embarrassment for both teams every game!

Officiating mistakes are as old as the game of football itself and rarely can they be blamed on bias, especially in the replay age. We all know damn well that this board has its own group that credits any PSU win to bad officiating as well. Every fan base has 'em.

I never care about stuff like that, when the Seattle fans complained that the refs gave the Steelers Super Bowl XL, my response was "I'd like to thank the refs for cheating for us, now FCCCK You Seattle, LOL!"

Tell those PSU fans that I credit their record and lofty ranking to playing Pitt [who beat them], Michigan [who beat them] and tOSU [who they beat on a miracle FG block and return], and 7 high school quality teams. Then tell them to f**k off.

That was one of the most illegitimate officiating gripes ever. I was at the game and vividly remember several terrible calls that went Seattle's way. Not that Pittsburgh didn't catch some breaks, but saying the Steelers got every call and Seattle got robbed is still absolutely hysterical.

Tell your PSU friend that Ohio State opponents get called for 10.9 penalties per game for 89.7 yards, while Penn State opponents lead the Big Ten in opponents getting called for 13.2 penalties per game for 117.8 yards. Then ask them again about how Ohio State gets all the calls.

Officiating went against Clemson...got some bad calls and more of them than Pitt was subjected to. I am a homers homer and even I think that to be the case. That being said, a couple bad calls is never the reason, or even close to being the reason a 20 point favorite loses.

Penn state JA's- dumbest fans in all of college FB.

I was at the game and watched the game on tv. To say there was conclusive evidence to overturn the whitehead fumble return is nonsense. Based on the replays, the PI calls onClemson were all good calls as was the hands to the face call. Clemson may have had a case on the unnecessary roughness call on the one tackle but none of us know when the refs blew the whistle. Bottom line is that officiating played no role in the outcome of the game and the one really critical call went in Clemson's favor.

Ps- PS sucks!!!!

ACC officiating in general is awful and has been for as long as I can remember. The only issue I had was the phantom holding call threw from the back judge 40 yards away from under the goal posts. This cat runs out and throws a grenade half way across the field. That was a terrible call. Clemson has gotten its fair share of calls this year and I think it all evens out in the long run. I was there so its harder to see the bad calls but Im certain we got favorable call also. I dont think we played as bad as you guys played well, it was a hard fought game and not the outcome I wanted but you guys certainly have gotten my respect and earned the win. I cant wait to come up and visit Primanti Bros and Heinz Field. Good Luck the rest of the way!

After the Ohio State game a nitter I work with came in and started bitching about some call in that game. I said to him that I didn't see the call that he was referring to, but that Penn State would need to get about ten consecutive years of bad calls for things to even out.
