When you have a player who can play both ways who has final say. I assume the head coach gives a green light but if you are that players primary position coach do you have any say on how the other coach can use him. This is in reference to Jordan as well as JC in the past. Arguably these two were the best on their side of the ball but if I coached them primarily I would hate to risk an injury when he is only playing a handful of snaps not in his main role. I guess the same could be said regarding returning kicks or punts.

I would assume the position coach has some say in it. But the HC makes the final decision. Also, something like this would probably be started by the HC. And then he'd ask for opinions.

A guess on my part.

The coaches meet every day to discuss everything including stuff like this. Narduzzi said Chaney has been asking to use Whitehead all year since he doesn't have any playmakers other than TB, amd TB is not the same explosive kind of ballcarrier that Whitehead is. Narduzzi also said that without Whitehead the D would be screwed, which is pretty obvious as he is the primary playmaker. Whitehead being a true freshman who has been asked to do a ton already, I assume Dooz didn't want to overwhelm him or risk an injury to him. Eventually our offensive struggles caused him to give it the green light. Obciously the move has had quite and impact already. He is easily our best weapon in the red zone running game.

Makes sense.

Whitehead reminds me of Reggie Bush. Not saying he has Heisman talent but he has that kind of burst...but is not your classic between the tackles runner.

If we dont get Sanders, I think JW is too good to play D full time. I think a lot depends on who signs. If we dont get Sanders, but do get Hamlin, you could put Hamlin and Maddox at CB with Webb and Mitchell at Safety with Ford coming in the next year. We're OK there. JW may have to be a 25 carry a game, 5 passes thrown to out of the backfield guy.

I just dont think our other RBs are good enough

I don't know if JW could take the pounding as a full time RB.

One has to think with Boyd moving on after this year, Whitehead is going to see a little more playing time on offense. How do you keep someone who you know can be a game changer on offense from playing there?

I was thinking the same thing. He's got in mostly at RB offensively this year, but once Boyd is gone I think he's gotta get a shot at playing receiver pretty much every snap.

Narduzzi and staff are going to have to test him and see how much they can use him without having him be too exhausted to play on defense, right? But yeah, he's too good to be given only a handful of plays on offense.

I could even see them using him in the wild cat quite a bit (like Pitt used to do with McCoy), because of the advantage he brings with his quickness and elusiveness.
