Coaching

What’s funny is a possession or two after that tech was in a prime situation to call a fake punt. Having already failed with it earlier at a time where it was unbelievably dumb to do so, kinda loses the element of surprise if you just go out there and try it again.

I know we criticize Narduzzi's coaching at times, but how would you like to be a GT fan today. Johnson using a fake punt call deep in his own territory early in the game was one of the worst calls I've seen in quite awhile.
What was really weird — and desperate— was that they had the slowest guy on the field trying to run for it...

All coaches make poor decisions - it’s just a matter of time...

Go Pitt.

Didn't think GT's coaching was that bad. Their WR Camp really hurt them with a wide-open (literally most open WR I've ever seen) drop for an easy 20+ yard game and then running a hitch on a hitch-and-go that led to the INT deep in Pitt's territory. Those plays may have cost GT the game (tho they were only in it because of extremely poor officiating)

Yeah. I actually respected the idea. But the play call and recipient were the issue i think. Didn't they lose some yards on the play before? He may actually had the play pre-called for a 4th and short and didn't alter for the greater distance.

You should see their message board....looks like this one after a lost to a P5 school....fire him...buyout....can't recruit with this system

Paul Johnson has had a very, very good career as a coach (183-95 all time; four ACC championship games; two orange bowls; turned around the program at Navy; two I-AA national titles at Georgia Southern) but he might be done at Georgia Tech. His buyout is reportedly only around $2 million.

All coaches and players make a bad decision or two during the course of a game, no one is perfect. The mistake is magnified though when the game is on the line. The timing of these decisions are what gets talked about on these boards.

I don't know how many people remember Pitt vs. Hawaii in 1992. That was Paul Johnson as the flexbone OC, I assume the first time we faced him. It did buy us a 12th game because we traveled there. We lost by a couple of TD's.

This may be the last time, though I wouldn't be shocked if he gets another year either.

I hope they keep him....
I know it's a PITA to play against the triple option, but they have a lot of talent at their disposal in GA if they hire the right coach look out.

Do you remember who Pitt's HC was that day at Hawaii? Hint: he was an interim and it was his only game as a HC.

Their new coach will have growing pains, and GT very well could do worse. Johnson won a lot of games over the years.

That’s not the way to look at it really.
You could always do worse. But that doesn’t mean a move shouldn’t be made. You have to decide whether a move needs to be made, and are you competent enough to make the right one? If the answer to the latter question is “No,” what are you doing being employed as the AD?
Johnson has done some good things. But he’s been there a decade, and on the whole they’ve gone in the wrong direction since 2014. It just seems like he’s gotten stale. Happens to everyone.

You got that right...dude took 4 seconds to get the couple yards to the line of scrimmage it seemed.

PJ is a good coach....imo Tech is much better because of him and his system than otherwise would ever be....

I remember that game. Hawaii kept running this play throwing out to 3 wr bunched together and getting
10-15 yrds a pop with it.

Agreed. We've fared pretty well W-L wise. One loss was solely our own dumb rash of turnovers to start the game. Assuming we continue with Narduzzi we might even have figured him out, based on Saturday's game. Certainly have more trepidation facing UNC.

I know that our passing hasn't exactly set the world on fire but we had guys open and we can see that Pickett just needs time/more experience.

But the GT passing game is a mess. Yes, the guy dropped the ball right in his hands...that's what guys who can't catch do...because he is on the field to block.

The academies run that offense because they have smaller teams and that helps equal the disparity. Going out of your way to recruit those guys and having to play the big boys every week isn't going to end well. GT has a lot of talent in their back yard. Calvin Johnson went there....they can do much better running a RPO offense. Paul Johnson's clock is ticking

Hope this is right. Now that expectations have sobered a bit for him, the opposite case has to be considered. Is he really just what the analysts said he is? Many do end up settling to their anointed level.

Put it this way, not completely a fair comparison, but i actually had hopes for Tino Sunseri after he played a very solid Compass bowl to end his first starting season. We know now that was woefully misguided. Similar to Chad Vojtik (and he was actually rated higher than Pickett, no?).

I think this guy has the better overall package and more chutzpah than both of the above, to go beyond what they did.

But poor OL that get you pulverized (making you skittish and uncertain), and subpar skill players around you botching your better efforts (like the Matthews drop on Saturday), and most critically a losing culture (such as fans like me for pointing this crap out!), have ways of holding good guys back.

Oh yeah, as for you other point, thinking GT can go toe to toe with other programs with a standard offense ... i dont know. They are a lot like us, and other than the magic Canada year, our offense is typically sludge. Like it is now. I actually think he has something there with his scheme... their problem is they need a similarly gimmicky defense!

I have thought for years he needed to tweak his system, make it more like SU in the early 90's. Then try and build a d, seems like that isn't valued in his coaching

He sure was. Pickett last year on rivals was a 3-star prospect, #23 player in the state of NJ, 5.5 rivals ranking.

Voytik was a 4-star prospect on rivals, a rivals top 150 recruit, the #4 qb prospect in the class of 2012, and the #1 rated player in the state of TN that year. Also, Trent Dilfer had him as the top qb at the Elite 11 Camp (after Day 1 I believe it was).

Paul Johnson is a douche bag. Sure, good coach, but a dbag.

Before the GT game this board was littered with post saying Narduzzi couldnt beat GT and we should just go run the option here, then we go out and stomp them for the 3rd time out of 4 years, holding their offense to basically the one long drive in the 4th quarter. I think several posters would have committed suicide if Narduzzi pulled that fake punt with say Camp getting the ball (by the way, I could totally seeing us doing that with O'Neil last year).

We played a good game, I thought Hamlin may get smoked before the game since he was out of position often against PSU. He proved me wrong, he had his best game as a Panther. We had terrific gap coverage, and not many blown assignments. Hopefully we can build that... that hasnt been the case at Pitt the last 35 years.
