I started following Pitt in 1976 (sort of like the Gutenberg bible analogy with respect to printing). It was a blast rooting for the Panthers to win. That lasted for a bit.
Then things went south and I started rooting for them to get back to the glory I had seen first hand. That lasted a bit also (probably too long if I am to be realistic). But it was something to keep me interested as well.
Now (40 plus years later), I tune in to college football mainly to root AGAINST certain teams (OSU, PSU, ND, etc.). That is not quite as satisfying as rooting for Pitt, but it is still something to keep me interested. A good Pitt season is now icing on the cake, so to speak.
But maybe some day before I go to that Pitt stadium in the sky, college football will be for me what it started out as...(one can dream, right?)
