From Pitt:

The pre-game coin toss at Pitt Football’s opening game on Saturday, September 5 will feature the 2015 March of Dimes Silver Dollar. The commemorative coin celebrates the March of Dimes more than 75 year legacy from conquering polio to championing the health of babies. The University of Pittsburgh and Youngstown State play at Heinz Field on Saturday, September 5 at 1:00 p.m.

The silver dollar coin, authorized by act of Congress, blends the March of Dimes past, present and future. One side (heads) of the coin features the likenesses of March of Dimes founder, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Dr. Jonas Salk, whose work at the University of Pittsburgh played a key role in the March of Dimes work to conquer polio. Dr. Salk’s polio vaccine was declared “safe, effective and potent” in 1955. After success in fighting polio, the March of Dimes turned to preventing birth defects and now to finding causes and preventions for premature birth. The reverse (tails) depicts a baby sleeping peacefully in the hands of its parent. The public can purchase coins at http://1.usa.gov/1MoGVwF.

Premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death in the United States. Worldwide, more than one million children die each year due to complications of premature birth. Babies who survive an early birth often face lifetime health challenges, such as vision and breathing problems, cerebral palsy, and learning disabilities.

The March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health. For more than 75 years, moms and babies have benefited from March of Dimes research, education, vaccines, and breakthroughs.
