Cooleys house for sale in Providence

Surprised Cooley would leave his hometown until I saw the money. Providence seems to always find good coaches, they’ll be fine.
Good coaches and some real good players. Always remember them from when I was a kid. VERY little CBB on tv then. But for some reason they televised games from the “Holiday Festival” trny at the old Madison Sq Garden during Christmas week. PC had a slick guard named Johnny Egan. This was back in the days when if someone dribbled behind their back the crowd gasped!

Also remember Pitt playing them in the NIT in the 70’s. The NIT was still a pretty big deal then. Marvelous Marvin Barnes, Kevin Stacom, Ernie D. The Friars won. 😏

Apparently they’re going to make a run at Friar alum Billy Donovan. Supposedly he’s fed up with the Bulls, but leaving an NBA job for Providence? Not sure I buy it.

Regardless, the Big East might have the best collection of head coaches next year if that does happen, along with Pitino going to St. John’s.

I was just thinking about that.

Marquette: Shaka Smart
Xavier: Sean Miller
Creighton: Greg McDermott
UConn: Dan Hurley
Providence: ???
Villanova: Kyle Neptune (young, but hand picked Jay Wright successor)
Seton Hall: Shaheen Holloway
St. Johns: Rick Pitino?
Butler: Thad Matta
Georgetown: Ed Cooley?

Poor DePaul: Tony Stubblefield

Wow, that would be a major hire. Wonder if St John’s would you rather have Pitino or Donovan?

Honestly, I think it’s a wash. Pitino is the better coach (IMO) but how much longer is he going to coach? At the same time, would Donovan be interested in St. John’s or a Big East school that isn’t his alma mater? He could likely have his pick of any big time opening (e.g., Texas if they don’t promote Terry).

I think that same question can be asked about Providence as well. Would Pitino prefer to stay local in the NYC area or return to where he began his Big East career? Seems as if there’s a lot of variables to consider with these openings.

Not sure. Isn’t he from Hempstead of somewhere on Nassau Country’s South Shore? Maybe he wants to move home?

Marvin "Bad News" Barnes. I recall them being ranked really high and Duquesne beat them at the Civic Arena. I think Norm Nixon's senior year.

Imagine being a Providence fan. You have a great coach, born and raised in Providence, active in all sorts of local community things as a native son, spent his whole career in New England, and was your head coach for 12 years. This is someone you thought was going to retire there. And then he up and leaves for a conference rival.

Ouch.

That first Georgetown at Providence game is going to be must-see TV. Do they give him the ‘LeBron’ treatment or thank him for his time there? I’m going to guess the former…

It's a $65,000 a year school best known for corporate and securities law. They have big donors.

Its a small school and its not Duke. I understand that they produce rich alums but any random state school would produce as many or more just based on their populations. So Georgetown being able to pay a coach $6 million/year when it only gets about $4 million/year in TV revenue doesn't seem to add up. If they can pay $6 million/year, couldn't PSU pay $20 million/year?

All were good players,
however Jimmy Walker
was better than all of them.

They produce rich alums that donate to basketball specifically or to the athletic department that prioritizes basketball since they don't have football. How many Penn State alumni are demanding the program spends more on men's basketball? Do you have a better theory?

Also I recall a while back, they got $1 million donations from maybe four NBA players on one day. IDK if that's less more or less likely now that they're not connecting to a Thompson/Thompson player

Penn State is a diploma factory. I would have to believe they have enough rich alums that can spend what the small amount of Gtown rich alums can spend.

Sure, but they're not basketball fans. Penn State has never had a strong institutional commitment to mens basketball. For Georgetown, it's their big thing.

I don’t think Cooley is an elite coach, but he will stabilize the program and Georgetown will be a consistent tourny team. Something they desperately need.

How long though until we hear grumblings that Cooley can’t get past the first weekend in then tourny? Georgetown fans have unrealistic expectations.

Since 1972, the've had four coaches. Ewing went 0-19 and 2-18 the last two years. Like in what world was he not getting fired?

Anyway I've always hated Georgetown but I like Cooley. His fast break/secondary break stuff is very innovative, there is a DVD of it that's worth watching for people who coach.

Random but is there still a Chic Fil A in the basement of the cathedral?
That's a great question. I wrote the Towers, but I think it was in the Union cafeteria when I was a student in the early 2000's. I rarely had enough food bucks to afford it, so it was a rare treat. I can't remember for certain.

PSU has 500K MORE alums than Georgetown. I am sure Gtown has rich alums dedicated to basketball but just due to the sheer volume, PSU absolutely has as many or more than Georgetown. Heck, they even had one build a hockey arena for them and who the eff cares about D1 hockey? There is so much money at Penn State. I think what's going on up there is that they dont actively try to be good at basketball like the SEC used to be. But there's so much money, they have to realize they dont have to spend every last penny on football. Like the SEC, they can go out and hire a big name coach from a P6 for $5-$6 million and still have more than enough money to go 10-0 vs shitty B10 teams and 0-2 vs OSU/Mich

Hey everyone! Hope you're doing well and enjoying life. I came across this post and had to jump in. Looks like Cooley is making the move (betchya he's hype!). Anyways, I'm new here, so hey! A cool thing I heard recently - if anyone is running into problems selling a fire damaged house, Fire Cash Buyers has a great service to help you out. Check them out: https://www.firecashbuyers.com/selling-a-fire-damaged-house-washington. Wishing Cooley all the best on making his move :)
