both of the QBs had periods of success and other periods of failure while at Pitt. The difference between those periods was not a change in their talents.

We are witnessing a similar situation with lack of success from Kenny Pickett.

Did David Priestly ever struggle? I know he lost the starting job to Turman but I thought it was more because Turman had a really good senior season.

That string of QBs from Turman and Priestley to Rutherford and Palko was fun to watch. Walt sure knew how to make QBs look good. Well, except for Matt Lytle

Yep. Pickett is not the problem. Right now, he's not good enough to win games by himself but he shouldn't have to. He has a terrible OC, no TEs, the worst WR group in Pitt history, and an OL that cant pass protect.

If we switched the other 10 guys on offense with Penn State, Pickett would awesome

Still amazing that Matt Lytle was somehow able to start an NFL game.

Priestly had that incredible game versus V Tech in 1999, but took a huge beating that took him a while to recover from. Turman was solid in 2000 and Priestly would have had a huge senior year if the no-huddle spread was never installed.

I remember that game. That was the real AB’s coming out party.

My biggest memory of Priestley was his 99 yard run to start the inaugural game at Heinz Field against one of the directional Tennessee schools. I've never seen a runner of any kind more untouched on a play...I don't think anyone got within 15 yards of him.

That and he could throw a really nice deep ball.

East Tennessee State was the school.

Lytle had a few decent games, but point taken.I agree,he didn't improve under Walt like the others.

Pickett isn’t the biggest problem but he hasn’t been good. He’s really struggling to see the field and his fundamentals are terrible

Funny you mention Congemi. I was watching some snippets of ‘84/‘85 action on YouTube and noticed Comgemi had developed a hitch as he setup for release. I’m sure safeties loved that. Then I watched ‘86 games. Hitch was gone. Proficiency way up.

Notice this year ND game where Pickett slides in the “pocket” towards his target often into the pass rush.

I think both are related to arm weakness. Congemi due to ankle injury and no coach until Gottfrieds QB coach pointed out his issue. Maybe Pickett is knee?

John Jenkins was our QB coach in 86 and got Gottfried to put in a bit of run and shoot stuff in addition to our two back offense.

I wouldn't be shocked if he really helped Congemi. He coached Andre Ware, David Klingler, Jim Kelly, Eric Crouch, Doug Flutie.

That team should have won more games of course.

Struggled in ‘01 when we got off to that 1-5 start under walt’s spread offense. Canned it after the 5th loss and Priestley looked much more comfortable and we won 6 straight.

It is a shame it didn't work, and we would have kept it as our offense. We would have been ahead of the curve, kinda... for once.

Yeah the shame is Walt probably doesn’t get credit for being sort of an innovator in that regard. But it didn’t work with Priestley, idk if they would’ve kept it with a force like Larry at receiver, and palko was great in the west coast offense. Had he stayed longer and known that was the plan though, after a few classes of recruiting kids for that offense it could’ve really been something.
