Luckily for us, the depth chart will look different when the games count for real.

Where is Kaezon Pugh? Would have thought he would be a DE on there. And I thought Hamlin moved to safety?

Thanks for the post. I am sure the depth chart will be way different in a month. But interesting to see where everyone stands in the coaches' minds now.

Not sure if it is a good or bad thing that blair was jumped by allen edwards, but he came on a bit at the end of the season hopefully he can build on that.

I see that Pitt is unveiling a radical new offense - it has 12 players.

Watts and Camp are going to create some issues up the middle.

Really hope McKee can beat out Idowu. Idowu seems like a great kid, but he got torched on the underneath routes (i.e. against UNC).

He was also weak against the run. He was a liability out there. But last year was his first extended PT. He could be considerably better this year. I feel like we're a year away from the LB unit being a strength instead of a weakness.

This is the year, Coach Pat & Staff have to Coach Up every Players Early to win 10 games but QB Browne needs to be divine and shine for Pitt to do it. If Coach Pat Narduzzi is going go from a First Time Good (2015) To Very Good (2016) To Great Coach it must show up in 2017 early and the entire year. Looking for big things from these Players being Pitt surprises even with Inexperience. The OL should be fine and glad to see many Underclassman Back-Ups!

TRIBLIVE:
*Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi assembled his depth chart before Tipton suffered a season-ending knee injury.

LINK:
http://triblive.com/sports/college/...-coach-pat-narduzzi-releases-2017-depth-chart

EXCERPT:
With players due to report to training camp July 31, Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi released the first version of his depth chart for the 2017 season Thursday. As expected, graduate transfer Max Browne, who won the starting job at USC last year and held it for three games, is listed No. 1 at quarterback. That means he will be receive the first shot at winning the job full-time. Browne, 6-foot-5, 230 pounds, is followed by sophomore Ben DiNucci, a Pine-Richland graduate. Redshirt freshman Thomas MacVittie, freshman Kenny Pickett and walk-on sophomore Jake Zilinskas of Indiana High School are also in the mix. The biggest surprise on the depth chart might be at middle linebacker where sophomore Saleem Brightwell, who played outside last season, is listed No. 1 ahead of senior Quintin Wirginis. Brightwell played middle linebacker in spring practice and impressed coaches well enough to hold onto the position entering camp......................

Absolutely! I guess my in-person experience during the UNC game when Switzer, etc. kept exploiting Idowu with the game on the line really left an impression. I do remember Idowu getting slammed through the end zone on a running play last year, but can't remember which team that was against.

Two questions- I thought O'Neil was rumored to be injured for potentially the first month? Isn't Bookser suspended for his DUI?

It's kind of funny how almost everyone forgets that players improve from when they first get playing time. Ray Vinopal is a perfect example to remind people - he was awful his first year

im curious to see this improvement at the CB position. I think you may be right, especially at the CB position. well I hope so.. I think someone on the defensive line can definitely improve and should greatly improve over a few seasons. We've seen it a few times, guys like soto were decent, the dude from Steel Valley really had a good senior season (forget his name already).. I think we were just starting to see it with Taleni.

im not as confident as this maturation process at linebacker though. I think that is a skill set you either have or don't have.. No number of reps will make you THAT Much better. Yeah, you'll improve a little bit, get more comfortable but a good college linebacker, you know it and see it pretty early on. Only counter argument I have is someone like Gonzales but that was more of a position switch that created a late development..

So... any knowledge on Pugh? Injury? Can't make grades? Arrest they're conniving to keeping quiet (for now)? Airline ticket fraud sting? Drop foot? Looking to go to Hollywood and transfer to UCLA? Staggeringly homesick? Or another only-at-Pitt mystic phenom?

A RS Fr. learning a new position who will probably be a situational pass rusher next year.

well he is a redshirt freshman who has never played a down in college and just started learning a new position so I guess he just isn't ready yet to be anointed the starter for a d1 P5 team just based off of Aliquippa highlights from two years ago..

our DE situation isn't pretty but it's not that bad..

I don't expect Sean Gilbert, but better than Gilbert Gottfried. Just surprised he couldn't make the depth chart. Hopefully it means good guys are ahead of him and not, well, one of the more typical Pitt reasons.

it would be quite an insult, comically funny from a fan's standpoint though, if a freshman who has yet to even practice one rep at the position was higher on the depth chart over a returning player.. could you imagine that? someone like Folston or Blair, who have played the position for years, have game reps, getting overtaken by a redshirt freshman linebacker who has yet to even practice at the position.

talk about a sign of it being time to "move onto your life's work."

And you hear it all the time from fans. No recognition of player development.

On the one hand, they think raw talent and potential is everything. Expectations of high end recruits as freshman are over the top, and their disappointed and ready to declare them as busts when they struggle as early on. Some people expect Paris Ford to instantly come in and win a starting safety spot, even though he won't know a thing about how the D is run. I think he can help the team this year with his athleticism and football instincts, but in a specialty spot roll, and even then, he's likely to make freshman mistakes. EVENTUALLY, I expect him to be an All-American.

And there are countless examples of Pitt players getting increasingly better with age and experience. Vinopal is just one example, but a good one. He was the running punching bag on this board for a long time. He sucked beyond belief and there was no hope that he would ever be any good. Until he was good, with age and experience.

Not everyone gets better though. Some progress, others don't (Webb didn't). No gaurantee that Idowu will improve, but to assume and declare that he will not improve based simply on past performance is totally discounting the regular progress that most players make over their careers.

Sadly there have been some guys starting for us, especially on defense, in many years where you have to think random kids sleeping in Econ 80 class could step in and start over them. Particularly LB and secondary.

Pugh was a coup recruit from a location/school that has delivered many of our greatest players. I tend to have bigger expectations when we score one of em.

I don't remember Vinopal being that bad.. I admit, he came on STRONG his last year but was he really a punching bag on this board? Maybe he was, my memory is.. what was I saying?

Maturity and development happens but a lot of fans just assume it's the natural order of things and we've seen just as many situations where someone regresses or just doesn't get better. To expect someone to be better from last fall to now just because they are older and partook in a spring camp is very naïve..

I agree with you. With that being said some guys get an injury that prevents them from living up to their hype, were simply overrated, or other guys continue to get better and pass them up. People expecting DH to be an All American and drafted in the first 3 rounds are going to be disappointed. If you set the bar as a 2 year starter and good contributor to the team, then that is more realistic.

Spot on.
Think about it. Pugh is a redshirt freshman who just moved to DE in the spring. It would've been absolutely shocking to see him ahead of any of the four 4th/5th year guys at the top of the the DE depth chart.

That doesn't mean he won't play, and his role could expand as the season goes on, and he learns the position, and starts to get a few reps.

I can't wait to see Pugh, Pine, Coleman, Campbell and other young guys actually playing and excelling on Pitt's D. A lot of potential stud defensive Narduzzi recruits learning and growing. Patience sucks, but that's the reality.

Dude, im with you on Pugh, I really am.. And if I were a betting man, I'd assume he will be in our 3 deep at DE by the time the season kicks off.. I am hoping, maybe a bit over optimistic, that he will be in our two deep by September..

If by this time next year rolls around, and Pugh is not comfortably in our 2 deep at DE, Especially since Blair and Edwards will be gone, then your original question is a good one..

It would be absolutely naive to just expect someone to improve, and I said so. I was making the opposite point: that its foolish to assume that someone won't or can't improve, because many times, guys do improve.

True, but not sure Vinopal is a great example. He was the best option we had, but he wasn't good, ever. Plus, he played more at Michigan as a true FR than he did as a RS SO at Pitt.

Vinopal made the absolute most of his physical abilities and was a fine point man in the secondary. A cup of coffee with the Steelers is testament to his quality.

It speaks to many things ( embarrassment of riches for the big teams and chasms of inequity in particular) that he wasn't adequate to star at Michigan, but was our best guy at the position immediately and totally when he walked in. Such is college sports.

The most surprising name on the list is true freshman Drake at RT.

Drake was an incredibly sought-after recruit, with the likes of Alabama, Auburn, LSU (the majority of the SEC); in addition to Michigan State, WVU, and UCLA going after him. It's not unheard of for a freshman to see time along the OL if they can pick up on the playbook quickly. He has the size, now he needs to prove he has the ability to learn quickly if needed.

Yeah this is more like it. A splash guy actually showing it.

Brightwell won't stay inside. Wirginis is going to start inside and then you have Brightwell and EZ on the outside.
