In addition to the alma mater, I closely follow the Dallas Cowboys, and I wanted to share some thoughts on Mr. Street. Devin Street has reached the first real crossroads of his NFL career.
Last year, the coaching staff thought enough of Street that he was active in every game. Despite being active in 16 games, he had only 2 rec. on the season. That was ok, though, because they had 4 good receivers ahead of him and they were winning. Dallas had the luxury to let Street develop.
Fast forward to 2015. The big roster change is that WR4 - Dwayne Harris - leaves in free agency. That moves Street up to #4 by default. In reality, though, Dallas' slot receiver Cole Beasely is really too small to play on the outside, meaning that Street is the primary backup to both starters Dez Bryant and Terrance Williams. No WRs were drafted, and the rest of the camp WR roster was filled with Rookie FAs and guys who have never made it.
Street did not have a great camp. He had nagging injuries throughout, which limited him in practice, and when he did practice, the reports were that he was not impressive. He had some moments in a pre-season game, including blocking in the run game, which is important. However, the only reason Street stayed the #4 receiver is because no one was on the roster to challenge him, and Dallas invested a 5th Rd pick in him and wants to see more. GAME 1 - Dez Bryant gets hurt, Devin Street comes in - and he struggles to get separation and on his only catch, he fumbles and turns the ball over. Romo didn't look his way again.
Now with Dez out, Dallas has Williams, Devin Street, two little WRs who really can only play the slot, and a guy they got from Oakland yesterday. Devin Street will start and see a lot of snaps. He essentially has a 6 week audition to justify his spot. He needs to stay on the field and play through minor injuries, and he needs to be a viable option in the passing game. He will only be asked to be the 4th or 5th option, but there will be 2-4 plays a game where he is going to need to make a play. If he doesn't and we begin to see this WR from Oakland get more snaps, it could be the beginning of the end of Devin Street in Dallas. Because he is not a key special teams contributor, he needs to make the most of the next several weeks. A 5th Rd. pick will get deference over guys off the street (no pun intended), but only for so long.
Devin Street's time has arrived. This is his golden opportunity to show that he belongs at the NFL level. I am sure he is excited about it and hope he makes the most of it. His next 6 weeks will go a long way to determining what kind of career he has.
