Dick Groat has passed away

I will always remember Dick Groat as the National League MVP in 1960, the year the Pirates ended a 33-year World Series drought and beat the mighty Yankees in spite of being outscored in the seven game series 55-27. RIP MVP.

Amazing life and accomplishments… hard to even imagine it really. Lots of fun moments as Pitt analyst as well. RIP sir

Dang, that's a kick in the gut. I know it was becoming closer to reality but, I still don't like it.

I got to know Mr. Groat in the 1980s when we first started going to the Big East. He was always such a gentleman.

Terrible news.RIP Dick! He was great to listen to.Another mistake the Pirates made was not putting him in their HOF last year.I had a bad feeling this could happen. They should have as well.

Yep! I said last year that Groat and Teke should have been in their HOF year given their age/health concerns.

You could see in the video they did when they told him that he made it this year that he was not doing well. Apparently it was later that day when he went to the hospital. So at least he got the word before he passed.

RIP Mr. Goat

Ran into him several times at Champion Lakes and he was always so nice.

We used to play in a scramble there (mid 90s through mid 2000s). It was always held on the the same day as the Kentucky Derby. It was a lot of fun. Play golf, dinner / awards, and then watch the Derby. We usually tried to play there several times a year, and would usually get a round in the week before the scramble.

That's a course that plays so much longer than it's card. We used to joke that every hole seemed like it was into the wind. Gosh, haven't played there for 15 years. Gotta get back out there.
