One thing an early signing period would have a chance to do is to help clear the air regarding any prior verbal commit for both sides. If a recruit has verbally pledged and declines to sign with the school he has committed to in an early signing period, that would seem to be a pretty clear indication that he's not really completely "committed" after all. Maybe just looking to have a place held for himself, instead. If that's really the case, that's fine. No recruit, committed or uncommitted would be obligated to sign early. But it would at least give the school a chance to have more time to then take whatever other measures they feel may be necessary to compensate so they don't get caught short.
