Different take on Narduzzi sideline antics

You are right that the refs were not calling the push offs by VT WRs. It was very frustrating.

Though, what likely was hard for you (and Narduzzi) to see (because you were at the game and not seeing the replays) is that Pitt's DBs were often grabbing onto the jersey of VT WRs. What was puzzling was that it often didn't seem like it was even necessary. It appeared as if they could have just as easily put a hand up to try to make a play on the ball.

It's very possible it looked more one sided to Narduzzi too, as he was not able to see all of the replays. Pushing off on someone is easier to see, since the defender's body quickly moves away from the WR. Bad officiating indeed. Many calls were missed on both sides.

That's the thing. The were bad for both teams. But there have been way too many blatant calls missed in ACC games this year....in every game. That can't happen. I know it is a hard job and they are human, but you can't miss blatant calls out in the open, like facemasks or holding calls where the defender's jersey is being ripped from behind. The complaint is how inconsistent they were. No one knew what a penalty was.

There is a line and IMO HCPN crossed it, but one of the biggest reasons I was frustrated was that we were (by far) the team benefitting the most from the poor officiating. I mean, he argued the offsides on the INT and we were a full yard over the line. Argue and defend the players when they are in the right, but to do it all game when you are obviously teaching/reinforcing them to grab WR jersey on every play they can or a play where the penalty couldn't be more clear, is when you start to look like a blowhard.

Exactly , you.nailed it

It may have been a bit too much, but he has to complain when bad calls are made. You have to let the refs know when they suck. You can't allow them to miss calls and not be held accountable. If that means you scream at their a$$es, you do it. What he and Fisher did (by getting fined) brought attention to how poorly games have been officiated in the ACC this year. So much so that there have been articles on it. Good for them.

I didn't mind when Jamie did it, either. Although, he would complain and give a bit of a smile, while Narduzzi was blowing a gasket. Players appreciate the fact that the coach realizes bad calls are being made. It is better to have the coach handle it vs. the players.
Ok. He went nuts on the officials when we had a player line up about a yard offsides and negate an interception. Where does that fit?

Our boners for cowher were from him winning and I'll go out on a limb and say leyland never caused any increased blood flow to the nether regions save yelling at bonds in spring ball.
Huh? Only Earl Weaver with his cap turned around got under the umps' chin more than Leyland. MacLendon was childish if you ask me. Leyland was old school. In your grill beefs with the authority. You need to find some footage of some classic confrontations. It'll come back. You can see Leyland's head bobbin and weavin from the 500 level seats.

Let me start by saying, I personally have no problem with it so long as he's not hurting the team by drawing penalties.

But, a question for those who like his demeanor...
Did you also approve of Dixon's working the officials??

Seems a double standard.. One is called fiery, the other was called whiney.

I loved Dixon doing it as well. Any intelligent coach is going to try to get an advantage. Narduzzi did that without a penalty called, and the penalties stopped.

It was perfect, how could anyone deny it?

His head was bobbin and weavin because he was smoking in the dugout, and was trying to stay out of camera view.

If he was actually right in his argument with the officials that would be one thing. And then the way he reacted after he got a call was very childish.

We definitely weren't on the short end of the stick. We grabbed on every single play that we could. Watch the replay and be honest and it will be clear. There were at least 4 plays where there was separation, but our guys had a handful of jersey and no flag. We could have been flagged on about 15-20 pass plays. The play some Pitt fans want to complain most about "Ford jumped up and pulled his head down, while the Pitt DB got flagged for DPI!!!" was a great example because our guy had a hold of his jersey the entire time and their guy had no other way to get to the ball. Textbook DPI. And no, it isn't a situation where it is on both. One guy is getting interfered with and goes for the ball as he is being interfered with. It doesn't offset.

The people complaining about push offs are really searching and clearly not watching much football. Their WRs did exactly what everyone is allowed in the game. Hand jostling is allowed and as long as the WR or DB doesn't grab or get fully extended you can gain separation with the hands and forearm. If it wasn't allowed we would never catch a pass or never not get a penalty on defense.
If you are playing the position of cornerback, you are clutching and grabbing as much as you can.
They all do, including the steelers corners. The point you are missing is the game wasn't called in a consistent manner. That's all that any player and coach would ask for from an official at any level. "Hand jostling" as you call it is play if the officials are letting both players do it. That being said, when a WR extends his arms into the defending player when the ball is coming his way, should be called a penalty and in that game, it wasn't.

Narduzzi going "nuts" as you call it is a result of him watching his team get screwed over by the game officials. He was mad and then one of his players screwed up and that was it. Kind of like having a bad day at work and you come home and your wife says "hello" the wrong way and you lose it on her.

did the refs cheat when nate threw a pick? did they cheat when whitehead whiffed on a very critical play to keep the chains moving for a critical first down? did the refs cheat when we dropped a interception. did the refs cheat when we fumbled a kickoff return in our own territory? we had chances to win the game....we failed.

blaming the refs is a complete losers game. take a long hard look in the mirror, we have near the worst passing defense in college football. our defense is far worse than Matt House.

first fuentes took a swipe at our fan base early in the year. posters on this board were going nuts at the time and called him out. then the game happened. on top of that, he won the game.

Yeah, no, that isn't true. Our CBs were and do grab jersey and pull and hold. It isn't jostling. It is holding and DPI on almost every single play, unless the WR beats them so badly they can't reach the jersey, which also happens pretty often.

The push offs happened some, but nowhere near more than normal and it was happening when their WRs had no other way to get to the ball because they were being held. That means the penalty is on the defense and not the offense or offsetting.

We weren't getting screwed. We were playing the way we always play (either committing penalties or getting mushroom stamped) and HCPN coaches. We were by far the beneficiaries of the uneven and poor officiating.

I can agree somewhat with that. However, the ultimate is winning. If it doesn't lead to that, you are just an embarrassment without the fruits of your labor.

eh, I mean, you are right I guess at the end of the day. But winning happens with double zero on the clock, not when you are fighting tooth and nail during the game.

Tell you what, you convinced me to say post game bitching is just dumb. But during the game it is usually beneficial. How many times did an opponent blow up on the sidelines then the next play, no holding call is made or in basketball, a touch foul against the other team. More often than not the official gets a bit hypersensitive to the other teams fouls.

Well, and really it is a longterm thing. This won't matter if HCPN wins big because 1. We will be winning so he won't be as pissed off 2. People don't care much when you win.

For one week, in a loss where, really, we were benefiting more than the opposition, and for a defense that is just God awful it looks bad, but if we win out? No one will care if he blows a gasket all the way to 9-3.

I think Dixon acted like a whiny baby and the other night Narduzzi acted like maniac who can't control his emotions.

And often times the way Dixon acted was a deterrent to his team and I think Narduzzi did the same disservice to his team the other night.

when done correctly. You scream and yell every play, refs will ignore you.. See it in hoops more often than football. Dixon would scream and cry about some call in the first half against a team like Howard.. got to pick and choose your battles. You scream and cry the whole game, you'll build a reputation among refs and wont get any benefits..

I don't know what football games you have been watching lately, but every team that makes their CB's play man to man coverage encourages their players to use their hands to tie the opponent up as much as possible, even the Steelers do that. Were the Pitt CB's holding at times...ABSOLUTELY, but that's not the problem. The problem is when they only call some of them and leave the others go. Be consistent, if it's a penalty...call it.

Good post, it was mention that Coach Narduzzi brought it up in this Weeks ACC Coaches Call Conference was vocal on Wide Outs not being called for Pushing Off, and we shall see if the ACC Refs change or ignore it?

This was big controversy in 2014 when Notre Dame won a game with the ACC Refs giving them a Win on a Push Off WR call?

This particular "Ref Judgment Call Penalty" has been controversial in all of CFB Games and it is still a judgment call and not much anyone can do about it, we shall see if complaining about it works?

Refs look bad either way they call it because it can change the game from a win or loss. I think they favor the caution of the Wideouts making the Catch over DBs not stopping it, since they could call it either way almost every play???

The way I see it, Coach Pat did the right thing to point it out, but Pitt DB's still have to adjust, execute, and master defending against it, and until they do, Coach Narduzzi has to work on coaching them to do it.

The problem as I see it, he has to teach, coach, and then make sure new DB's replacing Injured DBs, learn it. This is never easy and only Game Experience makes it better to accomplish it.

Moreover, the Wideouts are still making great catches even if some Pitt DBs are all over them.

Again, that is greatly solved by Game Experience and unfortunately one or two plays have cost Pitt at least 1 to 3 games to date learning it!

Coaches Complaining is part of it, but Coaching keeping at teaching DBs to handle it is a bigger part of it, until all the DBs start to execute it, with or without whining!

Our issue isn't using our hands. Our issue is our CBs grab handfuls of jersey and pull and hold. There is an enormous difference there and we do it on any play we are close enough to grab the opposing WR. We have benefitted enormously from the inconsistencies. We should be flagged much, much more.

Well it's hard to say a guy who won as many games was deterring our team.
