The comeback was "unlikely" and this gem: "The enthusiasm over Pitt’s new hurry-up offensive style that erupted during training camp fizzled quickly when Holstein had trouble finding rhythm until late in the third quarter."

Who besides the writer says it was unlikely? What's the basis for saying enthusiasm fizzled? And exactly whose enthusiasm fizzled?

If you're going to write news, at least use attribution -- or keep your opinions out of news stories. 🤮

He’s just being honest. It was unlikely and the offense looked bad for 2 plus quarters

Not many Pitt fans including myself thought they’d pull out the win
I'll concede that the "unlikely" comment isn't the worst of it. But would you ever see a Pennsylvania writer says that about Penn State? No.

But where's the support for "fizzling enthusiasm"? Attribution is the first thing they teach in journalism school.

It was absolutely unlikely. But not sure he should have used that word. Also, don't think it's a big deal. Pitt looked as bad as they've ever looked through 3 quarters and showed no signs they could even keep it close but they rose to the occasion. Glad I made the trip.

Pitt hadn’t come back from that big a deficit since 1971. So yeah, it was unlikely.

"Unlikely" was spot on. If anything, the first half was extra frustrating because there were big plays all over the field that Holstein was missing. The offense was working, the QB just wasn't executing. That changed in the second half. Either way, would never have given what Jerry wrote a second thought.

He did miss a few passes but were there really that many big plays? Seemed to me Cinci was doing a pretty good job of covering guys Didn’t seem like WRs were getting open. In the second half when they went to the ground more and he took off and ran more that seemed to open up the pass game

Hard to tell on TV though if guys were open and he was not seeing them or if the coverage was good Because there was a period where I was thinking that no one was coming open but I could be wrong

What he wrote was common sense and accurate.

Sports journalism allows for opinion. Have you read Myron Cope’s old sport stories?

Adverbs are generally not used in news reporting, but the best old-timey sports writing is loaded with lys.

Jerry wrote a good article.

Certainly was unlikely, but without the ability to execute the up-tempo offense in the 4th quarter the comeback would have been impossible.
