Always thought the meth head hillbillies were your main rival but it seems like psu dominates conversation here

Honestly not sure why the knuckle dragers from wv & ups haven't built more of a rivalry? Both have bogus degrees, rural campuses and you park in someone's yard for a football game.

JoePa felt playing WVU was beneath PSU once they joined the B1G.

I didn't like West Virginia when they were the rival we played every year. I absolutely despise Penn State though, nothing else even comes close. They say hate is a strong word, I will reserve that word only for Penn State then.

I hate psu more but I consider WVU a bigger rivalry.. as far as "who I want to play annually more" I'd say psu.. So I am all over the place.. WHen I see a guy wearing a psu hat or I drive by a car with a psu sticker, I actually get mad.. Freakin weird considering I am getting a tad older and trying to prioritize sports down my list over such things as my kids and my job..

You are not alone. I was on campus last night. My father is in critical care at UPMC. I saw two guys wearing PSU hats. I wanted to fight them.

I never hated WVU, basically because I have a lot of fiends and family who are hoopies, I've visited there and enjoyed it too, we always had joint Pitt/WVU tailgates in Pittsburgh for awhile there because of our group. Just thought of it as a hard fought rival. Now Penn State? I've grown to hate that school, arrogant assholz so it's PSU by far as far as hate.

Simple hypothetical...Assume neither of the teams is undefeated and on the cusp of a national championship....Penn State vs West Virginia in a game. Who do you root for? WVU, not even close. In fact if it is Penn State vs The Taliban I'm out buying a game day mountain turban and eyeing up their cute sheep cheerleaders....

I grew up not too far from PSU. They are the most pompous fan base I have ever come across; hands down. I even lived in Atlanta, which had a population of fans from all over the South; and really all over the Eastern US.

Growing up having to listen to that I grew to dislike them at an early age. Going to Pitt made it worse.

I feel your pain. I grew up in that area in the 1970's and 80's and had to listen to their crap. I have really never encountered fans like them anywhere else. I've lived near Cleveland when the Browns were good in the late 80's. I lived near Buffalo in the early 90's when they were good. I lived near Dallas in the mid 90's when the Cowboys were good and at Ft Hood, Texas with the Longhorn fans. They don't even compare to the arrogance and delusion of PoSU fans.

Wvu fans are delusional, but they just aren't too bright and that's what bothers us about them. But any fan base who considers THEMSELVES as the victims in a case that involved a serial pedophile rapist, there are just no comparisons.

Ditto. Grew up in Harrisburg, surrounded by family and friends that are fans (95% which did not go to PSU, btw). Seriously the worst, most delusional and pompous fanbase in all of sports. They REALLY do believe that Penn State is different than other schools like FSU. That kids aren't offered scholarships not because they aren't eligible, but because they don't satisfy their high academic standards. And that their kids don't get into trouble like those other athletes. Ugh...

If you want a real good laugh check out their board after the Ohio State game. Posters were talking about how classless Urban Meyer is and someone literally said they were so glad Penn State decided not to hire him and were able to avoid the headaches he brings. They get more delusional by the second.

If you look at the psychology of it, they have to say those things so they can sleep at night. Their lives are so pathetic that PoSU football is their identity. They really are victims, but of their own stupidity. They have to say things like that about Meyer. They have to believe paterno is innocent. If they believed the truth, they would be bathing with their toasters.

Hate to admit it but I miss our rivalry game! Just not the same anymore in the Big12, but I have to admit I can't stand Baylor and their fans jumping up and down during the game.

I don't know how anyone can support a program that allowed a pedophile to run free on campus for decades. For this reason psu sickens me. I honestly don't care one way or another about wvu

Oh, I did. I even posted a few times, but then I realized I was trying to reason with the misy delusional group of people in the sports world. Some said they were so close or that one bad call.by a ref completely changed the game - yes, a 28 pt loss was the result of one bad call

UPS, and not even remotely close. The hoopies may be lunatics, but the hoopies are decent people, by and large, but I am sickened by the cultists. All those years bragging about the Paterno Way, success with honor, blah, blah, blah. We always knew it was crap and now the world knows it too. Granted, not all UPS people are like that, but it sure seems like a high percentage.

I did the same about a month ago. I'll only check out their board now for a good laugh every now and then. You're absolutely right, there is no reasoning with them. I don't even try and argue. They keep sticking their noses up at everyone else and I'll just keep looking down on them. Never gonna change so it's pointless.

OK this is a ridiculously easy question, even for someone who hasn't been around Pittsburgh and Pa. for over 35 years. The rivalry, or should I say hatred of Penn State vs. Pitt has been around a long, long time, with it's best of times in terms of heated/hated and nationally competitive games from the mid 70's - late 80's. WVU was a rivalry game for Penn State as well, but nowhere near the level of hostility and importance as the Pitt home and home annual game, often played on Thanksgiving weekend. I'm a native Pittsburgher and yes a PSU grad from 1980, but although somewhat biased, this question is a softball. Can't wait for the return of the series next year, even if only for 4 years. This should absolutely be an annual game for the state, region and for the good of college football fans everywhere.

PSU.
Their fans are the worst. Especially on the message boards. At least you can have a discussion on the WVU board. They wont ban you if they don't like what you say and they are not delusional(well, in some aspects :) ) . They don't worship a ped enabler, and I guarantee if that scandal happened at WVU, coaches like RichRod would have body slammed Sandusky and not invited him to the luxury box.

I think a lot of the hatred comes from your fans though, not you personally, but the unwarranted arrogance of your fan base. I have never seen another fan base like it and I have lived in a great many places. As I said, I lived in central Pa when I was a kid and had to listen to them. One of the things that makes me angry is when your fans or people like the idiot Cook who say we are jealous. I was really into the rivalry from 1976 to 1988, when I was a kid, and in that span we were 6-6-1, so what exactly would I be jealous of? After that I went to college and spent time in the military and didn't really care anymore, it wasn't a big part of my life. Now I have a son who goes to college and I am a big fan again. So when your fans and the idiot Cook say those things, not just about Pitt fans but everyone, it makes you look like a bunch of arrogant a-holes. And the sad thing is you would think the scandal that happened up there would let the air out of the arrogance, but it didn't. The arrogance actually worsened.

No argument from me on this one, other than to say that every fan base has its idiots, or misguided representatives of their teams. I've lived all over the country as well and most large universities, certainly the major state universities have their over-the-top, arrogant fans of either football, or basketball depending on the historical success of their programs. Often the worst fans aren't even alums of the university and simply live near, or may have attended the university without getting a degree. I've seen it all the time around Texas (UT & A&M), California (USC, UCLA), Louisiana (LSU) and Ohio & Michigan. Notre Dame fans are arrogant and located everywhere, but many aren't alums of the university. Lastly, message boards can be the absolute worst representatives of a given fan base, simply because of a very small % of the posters that once again may never have graduated from the university, but live on said message boards spewing personal agendas and assanine posts (tens of thousands) without seeming to have lives outside of the anonymity of an Internet message board. No doubt the McAndrew Board has more than a few of these types of posters, as does almost every other message board of large, rabid fan bases.

I have to say this is right on. I was in crappy valley for a wedding a couple of years ago. It felt like the movie Halloween 3, Season of the Witch. Very creepy. They really are like zombies there, it is the strangest thing I have ever encountered.

To put it in terms of family . . . .

WVU is the crazy cousin that when you hang out with them, you are going to have a good time, but run the risk of getting arrested.

Penn State is the creepy uncle that you and your brothers don't want to be left alone with . . . .

So true for central PA. The vast majority of PSU fans there either never went to college or went to a state school like Shippensburg or Lock Haven...yet bleed blue and white. They are often the most diehard fans. I know many Pittsburghers didnt go to Pitt but are fans but at least they are local, not an hour and a half away.
