Does anybody remember this Pittsburgh sports show in the 1980's?

Cope and Cook were good. The other 3 are clowns.
Agree about Smizik but you didn't like Bruce Keidan? He took over for Myron on his radio show and used to write for the PG. He was arrogant but seemed okay.

Pitt never had a bigger media enemy in it's history than Bruce Keidan. He was brilliant and a great writer but he was such a Penn State homer it was unbelievable.

He made no attempt to hide his allegiances and made Ron Cook look like Beano Cook.

When did he stop writing for the PG? I met him when I was a kid at the Dapper Dan awards.

Ah Myron. Who here remembers Myron looking into the "Cope-ra-scope"?

It's also crazy to think about how long Savran has been on the Pittsburgh sports scene. Damn near 40 years.

That was the precursor for today's "Showdown" shows on KDKA and WPXI on Sunday night's. But my god, look at the talent we had in town back then vs now in regards to sports coverage. Myron Cope became sort of a caricature at the end of his career, but at one time he was considered amongst the best sports writers in the country and wrote for SI.

Keidan was from Philly but I never got a sense that he was in the tank for the Peddos. Savran, yes once he started doing PSU TV. I enjoyed Keidan's show, loved Myron's. They'd dabble into high school hoops or football now and then or horseracing or boxing. Cope's show with Howard Cosell as guest was epic.

I am old enough to remember the tone and narrative of local sports coverage in regards to Pitt and PSU.

Pitt got really good, through let's just say, "aggressive" recruiting tactics and football players had a pretty good run of the Oakland campus back then. Meanwhile PSU was really good and at the zenith of their now proven fraudulent "success with honor" BS that no doubt the old school Pgh media ate up because back then college sports was still viewed with the "amateur" prism that it obviously isn't nowadays.

Myrons best phone call line was when he said "are you a kid?" The best story was Penn State Normy. He would call and rag on Pitt endlessly. Turns out he was a kid and one day his father walked in and heard him taking to Myron on the show. His dad yelled are you Penn State Normy? Kid was never heard from again.

That squeaky clean PSU vs Pitt contrast could be seen in the game program pictures. The Nittany Lions in jackets and ties, fresh scrubbed. The Panthers in their raggedy mesh jerseys, unshaven and rumpled. Scholar-athletes vs thugs. Or so the false narrative went on..... I recall the P-G's Phil Musick as a closet Nitter apologist who jabbed Pitt at every opportunity.
