Does Louisville go big?

I imagine they could handle it but as it stands right now Oates buyout is around 12.5 mil according the espn+ article I saw yesterday. May be chump change for them though if they want him badly enough.

Louisville is an example of an ACC school that has to make an "SEC hire." I wonder if Buzz Williams could also be a candidate. Another school who should make an "SEC-type" hire is NC State. There's no reason NC State should be as mediocre as they always are while LSU, Bama, and Auburn thrive.

It’s Nate Oats or Pearl. Yes they’re going big

I love Oats but Pearl is way more of a Final Four guy for them. I'd give Pearl a blank check.

I think the college coaching landscape has to correct itself to get the guys killing it at non-traditional places to traditional powers.

Willard to Maryland
Pikiell or Cooley to Syracuse

Why? Why would a coach want to leave when they are already winning, making great money with some job security?

The Pearl thing made sense but I can’t fault him for not leaving. He’s built a fun atmosphere at Auburn and they have money to burn so why leave a place that you already have rolling for a school that needs some work.

Kenny Payne makes a lot of sense too but that’s going to feel like an underwhelming hire compared to Pearl, even if he flips DJ Wagner from a Kentucky lock. I’d sign up for Oats too, if only to throw water on all the Syracuse folks who think he’s an option after Boeheim.

These SEC jobs are coveted now. The schools pay well and you can cheat all you want and not really have to worry about ramifications from the NCAA. I wonder what took so long for the schools to wake up?

Since I started watching college hoops full time in 1984 the conference has been Kentucky and sometimes Florida and LSU. When I saw Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Miss and Miss State scores, I wondered if these schools really had teams because it felt like they didn’t really exist.

Tennessee’s hire of Pearl years ago helped give credibility to the conference, and I imagine after Rick Barnes is done there another good coach will take over.

louisville screams mid major , they have to be good at something, might as well be basketball.

Louisville in the ACC ? come on , what are we doing?

Pitt should be playing Seton Hall today IMO.

people just dont care anymore.

maybe someday they will.

Pitt just won 11 football games and the entire athletics department is in better shape today than ever before. Yes basketball needs fixed, but joining the ACC has clearly been a success for athletics.

not sure what your getting at ?
it tailed off.
Yes, Pitt is cool in the ACC , barely..... Half the fans hate that we play teams from the atlantic coast and not EAST COAST.

LOUISVILLE ????????/ they have no businesss at all in the ACC.........except for $$$

There is a good article in the Athletic about Chris Mack and his downfall at Louisville. Kind of a
strange guy and seems like he should go back to a smaller school. Good coach but just
not someone who can thrive at a big time program.

Are you still drinking or hungover from last night? Louisville is without a doubt one of the Top 15 basketball programs in the country. They print money.

surprise me if they brought
Pitino back.

Pearl was on radio weekly in Nashville during his show cause & he was consistent about his career goals and legacy. He said on many occasions that he thought he would retire from Tennessee & that if he were lucky enough to get another job at an SEC school (his preferred conference) he would like be a program builder and be that school's Jim Calhoun or Lute Olson.

It appears to be working out well for both sides.

The weird thing is that other than Kentucky & Arkansas, most of the SEC fanbases have a take it or leave it attitude about basketball. If they thought success in hoops had to come at the expense of football, they would gladly suck at basketball. That last statement isn't really applicable to the way athletic departments in the SEC today run today, but there was a time that mindset did exist.
