Ziese wrote a good article in today's Trib about tonight's game. He gave a brief history about the Eastern Eight. He said that Nova left after 1980 season and Pitt left after the 1982 season. He is correct about Pitt and Nova, but failed to say that PSU left after the 1979 season and was replaced by Bonaventure for the 79 and 80 season.

PSU left a note under the door that they were not returning because they wanted to play a national schedule. You know, PSU, the place with integrity and high values. They opened their national schedule by playing Muhlenburg. We continued to play them after that for a few years.

The thing that bothers me the most is that the Pgh media seems to be afraid to say anything negative about them, but is quick to blame Pitt for things such as ruining Paternos eastern league and not playing WVU now.

Also ...

.... PSU applied to join the Big East before Pitt was in the Big East and they were voted down.

Then Joe started to work on the Eastern League and was mad when Pitt joined the Big East at that point.

Gavitt ASKED Pitt to join the BE after they refused psu's' request.

Paterno wanted BE membership to fund his BB program. Dick Harter left after that, I think.

I have tried to tell this

story many times and people just look at me like what?? The coach that they brought in to go big time was dick harter.. also when ups didn't get accepted in the be was when paterno decided it was time for an all eastern all sports conference. pitt, syracuse and bc nixed that idea because of the big east bb. that was paterno's only way in a basketball league for psu at that time. when they didn't get in the be and couldn't form his all east sports conference that is it when they went to the big10

Re: I have tried to tell this

Harter was the coach there when they wanted to play more of a national schedule. When things didn't work out for him at PSU, he was heard screaming in his office (to no one) GET ME OUT of HERE.

You are generally right about the local media's Ped State envy but in this case I think Zeise is innocent. I don't think he was trying to protect Ped State's image or criticize Pitt for jumping to the BE.

PSU has always denied wanting in the Big East. They're nothing but a bunch of liars and the Pgh media believes them. Dean Billick once showed me a copy of PSU's letter to the Big East.

I know what you're saying, but in this case when I hear Eastern 8 basketball one of the last things I think about is penn st.
Their olympic sports have passed up their men's bb.

Good point Atch

The Late, Great Dave Gavitt, largely credited as the founder of the Big East, went on the record as saying about Paterno "if he denies applying for membership in the Big East, I'll call him a liar to his face"
