Despite signing three defensive tackles in the 2016 class, Pitt needs at least two at the position this year, but with guys like Donovan Jeter, Kurt Hinish and Derrius Mullins off the board, who is the staff looking at to fill the two spots?
Jaylen Twyman continues to be a top target for Pitt, and the Panthers have a good shot at landing him, so that should be one. But what about the other spot? There are a few options, including some unoffered prospects who could climb Pitt's board after senior evaluations.
But one name we haven't discussed is Kyree Campbell. He's a four-star prospect from Virginia and is listed as committed to North Carolina, but I don't think that's the case anymore since Campbell recently tweeted his top nine schools. It's an impressive list that includes Penn State, Ohio State, Tennessee, Oregon, Michigan, West Virginia, Clemson, Maryland, Temple - and Pitt.
And it doesn't seem like Pitt is just a throw-in on that list. Campbell tells me that he talks to the Pitt coaches often and is anxious to get on campus for a visit. He is hoping he can attend a game and take an official visit, although it might just be an official visit depending on how his schedule works out.
Here are some early senior season highlights:
It also sounds like Pitt hasn't given up on four-star New Jersey DT Fred Hansard. Despite being committed to Florida, Hansard has stayed in contact with the Pitt staff, and as long as that's happening, the door is still somewhat open.
Also keep an eye on Brandon Jones, a three-star from Georgia. He is listed as a defensive end in the Rivals.com database, but Pitt - like most schools - likes him as a defensive tackle. Pitt hasn't offered Jones, but he's in the group of targets who could get an offer depending on senior evaluations.
