ESPN Probability of Winnning -- Rest of Season

If she doesn’t replace him, isn’t she risking her own replacement?

I never thought it possible, but I think Capel’s unpopularity is near Kevin Stallings levels.

It is not just the results, but how he has handled the results.
Capel is truly tone deaf.

He attends a press conference addressing player departures in a BLM sweatshirt and somehow half the press is not invited.

After losing the team and the roster, he makes the ridiculous building a mansion tweet.

He treats the home opener double digit loss to the Cotadel as just another game.

No one is buying what he is selling.

Thereis a groundswell against him. No way he survives.

I have to believe that Heather has some trusted mentors and advisors in the AD departments across the country. People she can talk to about the current situation. Usually fans think they know things about the failings of a program but if you step back and look at those opinions with a thoughtful eye, you realize it is all just wishes from fans and not actual facts to about the situation. However in Pit’s current situation it is just the opposite. You see the poor play and the INCONSISTENCY and can hardly believe things are so obviously BAD. Heather sees that too.

I said a long time ago she is stuck because she cannot even use a guy from his staff as an Interim coach because they are so deeply tied in with him. She has to let the season just play out and end in a month and fire him the day after the ACC tourney.

She will be getting advice on the kinds of guys out there who have the ability to take a group of kids of any caliber and get them in a winnable condition within two years to provide enough hope for the future. That window can then help with maybe attracting more recruits and we go from there.

Capel has ZERO chance of coming back. Heather won’t let the basketball team be such a laughing stock that it effects football and other sports.
Agree

The problem is it’s gone too far, people are done with Capel due to players transferring out, lack of recruiting, February meltdowns, and many excuses. He’s failed in every aspect of coaching here at Pitt, and honestly no matter what he does from this point on people are beyond the point of caring cause they know he continually fails at his job. That’s why I think No matter what the money is, when you lose any and all hope thats the death of a program. A change needs made to bring that Hope back and we’ll go from there.

The funny thing is that for next year's team, I have far more hope for this team than a no-name coach and a ragtag group of 12 transfers

PG - transfer
SG - Burton
SF - Odukale
PF - transfer
C - Hugley

6th/7th: Horton/Sibande

I don't care about 2023-24 or 2024-25 right now. I want to have something to root for next season and as someone else said, the bones are there.

There is no "groundswell." Nobody cares. Pitt basketball isn't even a thought anymore. Its the Pittsburgh Riverhounds or Pitt volleyball. Very small, niche fanbase. Now, you can say THAT is a reason to fire him and that's valid but certainly there isn't some "groundswell." This board has like 30 posters who want him gone. There was more groundswell against Dixon to be honest but that's because people cared and were too emotional.

Wow.

The basketball team is going to affect the football team? That's an all-time classic. If anything, firing Capel harms the football team because the 8 digit buyout has to come from somewhere and while they won't take it directly from the football fund, $10 million+ is a fortune for a guy to not coach and Pitt's money and booster money is not unlimited.

You can hypothetically say they'll all be back, which is no big deal. But you can't assume anything, ever.

He can lose another round of players, and he probably will. And he will keep his job in all probability for at least another year. That's the way Pitt athletics works now.

He will NOT keep his job if he loses the players who matter. He is on thin ice as it is. Losing good players and potentially putting an 0-20 team on the floor next year is something Heather can't have happen. If he wants to come back, he has to return the good players and have some type of plan to get to the NCAAT whether its by hiring a package deal assistant, paying NIL money to some big transfer, or something else.

I think participation as a whole is down on this forum. you are right about the apathy.

Even the apathetic can overwhelmingly want him gone, they are just not vocal about it.

First you say he will most likely be back next season and think he should and now you say he's on thin ice. Dude you are all over the place.

He is on thin ice but that doesn't mean he can't return. Thin ice doesn't mean a firing is imminent. It means he doesn't have much margin for error. Losing his good players is a deal breaker.

You really are mostly clueless. Pitt basketball is a joke. That peripherally transfers over to the school’s perception at large. Football is in a great spot and should not be messed with. Go back to your lust for Pitino.

OK. Lets quantify this. If Pitt goes 2-18 in the ACC the next 10 years straight, how many wins fewer wins per year will that cost the football team?

You made one of the most insane posts ever on this board. Own up to it. The basketball team has 0.00000% affect on football win totals whether we win a basketball NC or go 0-31 for 10 years straight.

Just so everyone is on the same page here, this post was made by a guy who said that Pitt should neglect all sports other than football and men's basketball because any support those sports gets costs Pitt football and men's basketball wins on the field/court.

Not a groundswell

You think wearing a BLM shirt on the day you are to answer questions on roster turnover and internal strife is “appropriate”? (First he hid behind that. Then he hid behind Lyke’s skirt)

You think somehow having a scheduling “misunderstanding” that excludes a number of the regular media is acceptable? (Chris Carter set the tenor of the event with a softball question)

If you do, you are every bit the master excuse maker as the man described above.

I don’t think either behavior set an example for young black men or anyone else. Pathetic, gutless behavior worthy of scorn.

Good God are you dense. Really you should be out away with your stupidity over the years. Everyone mocks you, you do know that. A laughing stock basketball program will demean the perception of the university’s athletic programs. End of story. That perception will turn into a tool to be used by other coaches regarding the Athletic Department and what a kid can expect if they would come to Pitt. Go back to stealing Bracket Matrix teams and then claim you came up with them all by yourself. You are and always have been a laughing stock and I would not want the basketball team or Athletic Program to have your horrid reputation.
