A couple weeks ago I posted that for Pitt to win, we need a combined 25 point from our 1 and 2 spot. College basketball is a guard-dominated game and it seems that when we lose, terrible shooting, terrible guard play is a constant. So, I looked at some numbers from Robinson, Wilson, Smith, and Jones in our losses. I understand Johnson has played a small amount of 2 and Jones and even Smith have played a small amount of 3 but for these purposes, I'm looking at Robinson, Wilson, Smith, and Jones as 1s or 2s only.
Purdue: 23 points
Robinson 17 (6/11)
Jones 3
Smith 3
Wilson 0
Louisville: 3 points
Wilson 2
Robinson 1 (0/6)
Smith 0
Jones 0
NC State: 20 points
Robinson 9 (3/12)
Jones 5
Smith 4
Wilson 2
Clemson: 13 points
Robinson: 8 (2/6)
Smith: 3
Jones: 1
Wilson: 1
Virginia: 9 points
Wilson 6 (all very late when game was decided)
Smith 2
Jones 1
Robinson 1 (0/7)
Miami: 22 points
Robinson 8 (3/9)
Jones 8
Wilson 4
Smith 2
UNC: 29 points
Robinson 15 (6/19)
Jones 8
Smith 3
Wilson 3
Louisville: 18 points
Robinson 12 (4/9)
Jones 6
Wilson 0
Smith 0
Virginia Tech : 16 points
Robinson 11 (2/10)
Jones 4
Wilson 1
Smith 0
Georgia Tech: 17 points
Robinson 9
Jones 6
Smith 2
Wilson 0
I know we've talked defense all season and it appears to have gotten a little better but if you look at our losses, lack of offense has been one of the biggest, if not the biggest problem. For us to win games, our guards have to play well and they have to score. We cant rely on Young and Artis to carry the team every single night. Young had to have 20 early in the 2nd half just to keep us in the game against Georgia Tech. That's ridiculous. The way he was playing, we should have been up 12-15.
Its not asking a lot but for us to win, Robinson has got to score 12, Jones 8, Smith has to make 1 or 2 3s and Wilson needs to score something. In fact, in some ways, the lack of improvement/development from Wilson has been one of the most alarming things. At this point, as a Top 150 recruit, he should be contributing something and he hasn't.
