Trying to temper expectations off of this ACC win, what should we expect to do against Vanderbilt?

Well, they're not exactly
tearing it up this yr. As
of now they're 3-4. If we
bring our last two game
performances, I like our
chances. Can we keep it
going?

I'll be interested to see
how they attempt to
defend Burton. This is
obviously a good time for
Hugley to break out of
whatever is holding him
back.

Until Hugs wants to play hard and defend and show he can hedge effectively, I don't think he has earned the minutes. We look better without him right now. I haven't given up on him, but he has some serious work to do. If I'm HCJC, I don't disrupt what is working.

Yep. Continue to start him and put him on the bench if he’s ineffective. Just like the last two games. He’ll learn eventually.

If the other parts of his
game were working, the
hedging problem is easy
enough to fix....Just DON'T
hedge. The problems with
him are so many, that right
now, he's best playing fewer
minutes.

Speaking of hedging, I'm not
totally sold on how well we
actually do it. Yes, Fede is
far better at it than Hugley,
but other than a few times,
NC ST didn't know how to
attack it very well. When
their Big rolled into the
lane he was often open
before Fede and defintely
Hugley got back. It'll be
interesting to see if a
well coached team can
take advantage. Get beat
on the hedge and it's a
dunk inside.

We are going to get beat for some dunks but hedging is a necessity. Getting beat off the dribble shreds a defense and you wind up giving up layups or open 3's off penetration. Fede did such a good job that State had to take plenty of late outside shots. I guess we will see in upcoming games if we can continue to disrupt or if we get easily beaten for good shots.

I am in the camp that believes we should win. Last night's win moved us up in Sagarin's computer rankings enough that Vandy would only be favored by 0-2 points (all of it due to the about 3 point Home Court advantage).

After seeing the other
P-5 teams, on the schedule
I thought maybe we had
a chance with NW and
Vandy. Of course I didn't
see a win at NC ST, but
then again, who really
knows? After all, we did
beat NC St last year too.
Hell, we also beat UNC.
Capel has had us here,
before, but for some
reasons previously
mentioned on here, I
have a better feeling
about this yr's crew.

Well, I do agree that you
can "get beat for some
dunks."However, I don't
agree it's a" necessity."
Not all teams do it, and
some defenses do not
call for it. If you do use
it, it takes communication,
the ability to get back
in the lane, hopefully
not switching into a
mismatch, and good
help rotation. I think
Fede was ok last night,
but he was helped by
NC ST not attacking it
well.

Vandy home court is a strange setup. Those benches under the baskets is different. They have a couple guys who can really shoot the three. I think we have more talent though.

I think its going depend on the matchup. Yesterday hedging totally neutralized their leading scorer

I have tickets and can’t go I live in Nashville and have to travel for work now. If anyone is in town let me know

My sense is most posters
on here think that if we
play the way we did the
last two games, and the
2nd halves of the prior
two games we ought to
beat Vandy.

With that said, I also feel
that given our very bad
turn a rounds the past few
years is keeping many on
here from "expecting" or
predicting a win. Ok, here
goes....I "expect" a W, but
I ain't predicting it. How's
that for a wimp out! ;)

They have my interest, but they also did in yr 1 with Johnson, Mcgowens etc.
I'll leave it at that for now.

That's about where I am, too. I have to see more consistency and better game management to have a high level of confidence that we might win a game against a legitimate opponent. I've seen flashes of it in the last 2 games. But that isn't a trend yet. I'll wait and see how we do against Vandy and UNC. Those 2 games should tell us more.

That being said, I don't expect a win tonight but would take it as a small step forward and be happy if we do.

I mean what’s the harm in optimism?
Yup, No harm in "optimism."
It sure as hell is a lot better
than the alternative. IMO,
one thing that's different
now is the depth situation.
We can easily substitute
now and not suffer as
much on the floor. In the
past few seasons there were
times when our only option
at guard was to go with a
walk on.

What about Bigs? Last year
alone, Hugley leaves the
floor and we had Collier.
Brown? We had no other
option, he had to stay on
the floor. Anyway, just a
look at then and now. As
of now, Ill take NOW.

This could be a 20 point blowout either way. I have no idea with this team and two games is not enough of a trend for me

I think most posters
on here would agree with
you. A little optimism and
some hope based on what
these last two games have
shown us, is better than
what we had the last
several years.

I don't want to predict a win but I'm really hoping for a good win tonight.
I'm pumped for this game

ESPN shows Vandy by 3.5 from Caesar's, I believe. Also gives Vandy a 69.5% chance to win.

In contrast, Sagarin's computer shows Vandy by 1 point and gives them only a 53% chance of winning.

Hoping Pitt is better than either prediction and wins and wins comfortably.

I "expect" the team to play hard to the final whistle and be competitive on the court. As for results, I have no clue. I haven't watched any Vanderbilt games.
