Explain the McGowens foul to me

He DID kick his foot out to draw the foul the first time and it was called a foul on Syracuse. So the 2nd time, the refs were looking for it and called it but I did not see an obvious foul there? What did he do? And more importantly why didnt the 3 count? Whatever McGowens did, he did it WAY after he released the shot.

Is it going too far out on a limb to say that was the first ever foul called on a shooter on a made 3 PT shot? Honestly, that may never have happened before.

I have seen it they are trying to crack down on drawing fouls with a leg kick. You can also add to the list that frame did that on a 3 in front of pitt bench and they didn’t call anything. And like you said Mcgowens drew one earlier that honestly was kind of a weak call and Jimmy was screaming for a make up and got one on that second attempt. There’s really nothing to explain other than it was a bad call and a make up that boeheim was screaming for. Had a big impact on us I thought and not in a good way.

But why didnt the shot count? If someone drives the lane and shoots a floater then runs over a defender after the ball is releases, the shot counts and a foul is called. Why would McGowens 3 be waived off because he made contact with the Syr player while the ball was halfway to the basket in mid-air?

That is not the rule, and it hasn't been for years. When was the last time you actually saw a player get called for charging and yet the basket still counted? How many years ago was it?

The rule is that if the player is called for an offensive foul the basket does not count. Two or three, contact before or after releasing the ball, doesn't matter, offensive foul, no basket.

When did it change?

Yep, they removed the judgment call for the ref to decide if the ball had been released when the fouls occurred, I like the rule in theory, but sometimes in practice, I’m not so sure.

I was at the game so didn’t see a replay. Was the kick so severe that it should have been a foul?

I didn't think so, but for some reason they still refuse to give me a whistle.

I mean McGowen's leg did touch the Syracuse player's leg, and McGowen's leg was outside of the frame of his body, but if the corner three that Wilson-Frame made was a no call either way I don't see how what happened on the play that was called a foul was even close to as bad.

The only thing is that was such a tough call, and one that they seemed to get wrong an awful lot. So it least now they've removed the judgement aspect of the call. Offensive foul, no basket, defensive foul, basket. At least everyone can understand that.

Except for the people who don't know the rule changed, I guess.

No - there was absolutely no need to call a foul there, it did not effect the play at all.

On plays like that, the officials should not reward the shooter with the kick, but penalizing the shooter when it doesn't matter as far as the play is just ridiculous.

Boeheim got a call because of who he is and the fact he was dealing with a spineless official.

They could’ve absolutely called it the first time, but for the first time ever Syracuse didn’t get a call. The one they actually called was completely made up.

I saw a tweet earlier that someone on the Cuse sideline was working the refs early in the game about his propensity to kick his leg. Can’t say I’ve ever noticed it but I guess it worked.

It was a bad call.

And SMF you disappoint me, this rule was changed quite a while ago. For someone that supposedly watches a lot of CBB you should know that baskets haven’t counted on offensive fouls in years.

I was glad when they changed the charge rule.... I never understood how an offensive basket could count when in order to take the shot you had to commit a foul.

This instance though, where the supposed foul doesn’t impact whether there is a basket or not...it seems dumb to waive it off...but that is the rule.

Again though, it is unreal they called it. Also, listening to the lapdog espn announcers (that may have went to cuse) praise it as the correct call was pretty disgusting. I’m guessing they’ve never seen it called either.

You dont technically need to commit the foul to make the shot.

Lets say a guy shoots a running half court shot, his momentum carries him forward and he runs over a defensive player as the ball is going through the hoop. I guess that basket would be waived off.

Yes, if they ever called charging on a guy for doing that the basket would not count. Much like yesterday's call, I don't think I've ever seen that called in college, or anywhere else for that matter.
