I always thought Tony Dorsett's name was mispronounced during his college career. I didn't realize that it was he who changed how his last name was pronounced after he was drafted.

So, his last name was correctly pronounced, "Doorsit" at Pitt, and "Doorset" at the Cowboys.

Interesting.

He explains it beginning at the :26 mark:

I honestly thought it was really "Door-set"......but Johnny Majors accent and manner of speech made it come out "Door-sit". And of course in those days, there wasn't such a connected world and so what he said was the main voice. So everyone followed, and then Tony finally kinda set it straight in the NFL.

When he burst onto the scene at Hopewell High, it was "Dor-sit", accent on the first syllable, and it remained that way up until that Thanksgiving weekend game against Pennsylvania A&M (the game where Johnny Majors lined him up at fullback), ABC, which televised the game, did introductions of the starting lineups down on the field by having the players introduce themselves. When they came to Tony, he emphasized the short "e" sound in his name so heavily that he placed the accent on the second syllable. That ended up being the way most people pronounced it from then on. Over the years, I've met a number of other people named Dorsett (primarily from North Carolina, which may well be where Tony's family tree originates; I don't actually know), and they've pronounced it both ways.

Tony Dorsett came from Aliquippa, PA but his School District was Hopewell because his House was across the Street from Aliquippa, School District. Tony had 3 Older Brothers all great but that dates back to 1960s starting with Ernie Dorsett breaking many Track Records, then Tyrone 1967, that had Hopewell Winning Big too, then Kicky in 1969 but only played as Junior. All great as TD but opportunities were not as much. Hopewell was predominantly a White School and only had a handful of African-Americans. Many Players Sons whose Parents were on the School Board got selective opportunistic favorable playing by All White Coaches. Even SEC Basketball LSU Pete Maravich also born in Aliquippa and his Father Press kept trying to change the LSU Policies.

A New Coach in Butch Ross took over in 1970 and saw instant talent in Dorsett and Mike Kimbrough. Kimbrough actually played more on Offense in 1970 than Dorsett. Tony played Roving Monster Man in 5-2 Oklahoma Defense mostly as a Sophomore. He ran a few times on Offense but not much in 1970 season.

In his Junior Year First Game against Ambridge ranked 4th in the State, the first play Tony caught a short pass and ran for 70 yard Touchdown and went on to score 3 more too and his Running Back days were born and still played some Defense. He was known as Hawk by his Teammate because of his eyesight and great vision.

The Team Doctor at Hopewell was Dr. Zernich and all Pitt Grads and his Brother Michael was a star at Pitt and MD too. They help create the Golden Panthers mostly, highly successful Doctors, Lawyers, and Dentists and helped bring Johnny Majors to Pitt too. They all knew about Tony Dorsett early on and by his Senior Year so did the Nation as Tony was one of the most sought after Running Backs names in New Parade All American Magazine.

I think that unusual situation existed because Pennsylvania Municipal Law used to allow cities and boroughs (Aliquippa at the time was a borough, but changed later to its current city status) to expand their territory by annexing land from adjacent townships. Apparently, the neighborhood where Dorsett resided (called "Plan 11") had at some point been annexed into Aliquippa from Hopewell Township, but the school district boundaries remained fixed.

Wow. The players really were slower back then.

No, nothing to do with it, separate local governance. Had an Uncle live in Beaver County while we were from Thornburg at that time, use to visit all the time. Aliquippa was the largest Community and got the Post Office and later Zip Code when it came out in 1963.

Hopewell Township Independence and Raccoon Townships and Center Township were nothing but Farm Land not much population. This grew in 1960s and Zip Codes came out too. Hopewell, Independence, & Raccoon were and still are separate Townships, but were once HIR School District now Hopewell Area. Center Township was also Center School District but merged with Monaca now Central Valley School District. Aliquippa is smaller than both now but still known Aliquippa School District. Post Office is still in Aliquippa and 15001 for parts of Center Township and all of Hopewell Townships along with Aliquippa!

Plans 1 through 12 design by J&L Company and Aliquippa and in the 194-60 Aliquippa was National Top School District in America. Company design town store and homes. Plan 12 Superintendents, Plan 7 Foremans ets etc. Aliquiipa J&L was setting for Supreme Court Ruling for Labor Unions made Legal.

Plan 11 was mostly Italian and African Americans, but Tony's Home was in Hopewell Township right on the Border across Street was Aliquippa & School District. Most moved to Hopewell and Center starting in 1960s.

Madonna's Grand Parents and Father also from Aliquippa as Italian Immigrants and Father moved to Detroit Area as he was an Engineer fro Chrysler, but his Brothers and Sisters stayed in Aliquippa. They visited every year too.

It was a Coaches Game Film for Players and in Slow Motion! Dorsett was clocked 4.2 in his last year, and was running 4.4 to 4.5 as a Sophomore few did that in those days. Now it is common.

Dorsett used to work out with weights at Zernich's Tennis Courts and later worked in summers in County Recreation under John Patsy Francona known as Tito Father Terry Francona both were Major League Players and Terry current coach of Cleveland.

When Dorsett was being recruited our biggest worry was OSU's Woody Hayes not Joe Paterno.

Paterno wanted Tony as a DB and just a stupid move just like what he did to Justin King that was another great Running Back but played mostly DB at PSU.

Woody had Archie Griffin that ran 860 some yards in Freshmen Year so Pitt coaches used that against Woody. Griffin did his full start in 1973 got 1577 but Dorsett at 1,686 out rushed him without a bigger line Griffin had and out rushed Penn State Heisman Cappelletti 1,522 as well.

Neither were even close or better than Dorsett, but Freshmen did NOT win Heisman in those times and they just allowed Freshmen to play for the first year in 1973. Dorsett should have won the Heisman in 1973, 1975, and 1976! Both Archie & Cappy turned out riding the Bench Pines and NFL Draft Bust in the NFL compared to Dorsett!

The Beaver County Golden Panthers had Dorsett on continuous watch and listening to anything at Hopewell. Dr. Wallace Zernich, Mickey's Brother and Medical Partner the Hopewell's Teams Doctor at Games.

Anyway, once Tony Dorsett set the NCAA Rushing Record, Pitt won the National Championship, and Dorsett the Heisman, the envy at Penn State turned to Hate and told many lies about Pitt, Dorsett, and were just petty and jealous just like they still are in the Big Ten against Michigan and Ohio State better Histories & Players in the NFL!

We always actually had a cordial relationship with PSU Top Alumni often helping their kids get into Pitt, Penn, and Temple's Medical, Dental and Law Schools and still do, and why I admire many PSU Grads like them today, they are not the Cult Dolts!

Unfortunately, that was when Penn State Hate began and prevailed as well with many of their Fans, it took decades for Penn State to pass Pitt Series until 1992, and they often had far weaker opponents back then too. Paterno did win his first NCS until 1982, and that was due to Paterno giving Mike Guman a Scholarship and then remaining silent that his Father Ref Guman was actually was Reffing Games his sons played in and Alabama exposed it. Joe was good keeping that quiet as well being uncomfortable in reporting Sandusky as we know today even when told in 1976.

ON COLLEGE FOOTBALL; Paterno Got His Share Of Calls Over the Years:

Then there are the Guman affairs -- as in Referee Don Guman. He is the father of the former Nittany Lion Mike Guman and the grandfather of the current Penn State defensive back Andrew Guman, and he twice came under fire for officiating Penn State games in which the calls, well, went Paterno's way.
