I have been to all three of our earlier Sun Bowls. It really is a game for locals: almost 80% of the tickets are sold in West Texas and SE New Mexico. There is not much to do in El Paso, so it’s not a destination like Orlando where people take their families for a week.
It was a better trip before the travel advisory about not going to Juarez. Juarez was a lot more fun, even if you stuck to the PG-rated attractions there. When we played Oregon State, which was a year after the murder rate in Juarez skyrocketed, I came in the night before from LA and left right after the game.
Don’t forget to check Southwest if you are looking for cheap airfares. And, the idea of going to Vegas for 2 or 3 days and then flying to El Paso is a good one — except that Vegas will be jammed pre-New Year’s Eve and the hotel prices will likely be high.
I think I will stay home this year. The team doesn’t excite me and the coaching the last two weeks has been just awful. Besides, Stanford is a bad matchup for us. They have a very good DL and active LBs. Their weakness is their secondary — and we know Pickett can’t take advantage of that. David Shaw has slowly but surely brought Stanford from top of the PAC-12 status toward middle of the pack. But, they still have a lot of talent. We need to be able to run on them, and the OL hadn’t shown the ability to enable that the past two games. Stanford’s MG is one of the top DL in the country.
