Former Pitt coach files lawsuit

Former University of Pittsburgh secondary coach Troy Douglas said in a federal lawsuit filed Monday that the university violated his two-year football coaching contract when it fired him a year into the contract.

Former head football coach Paul Chryst recruited him from Iowa State in 2014. His contract wasn't contingent on Chryst remaining head coach, but the university fired him after Chryst left in December to take a head coaching job with Wisconsin, the lawsuit says.

Instead of making the $240,000 that Pitt promised him this year, Douglas had to take a $40,000 job at Florida State University, the lawsuit says. He is seeking the difference in his pay plus other losses his family has incurred as a result of the firing.

A university spokesman couldn't be reached for comment.

I thought Pitt was too cheap. $240,000 sounds in the range of top schools for a defensive secondary coach. Maybe I am wrong. Anybody know what the going rate is for a non-top position coach?

40K @ FSU does not sound like a football position. Not sure how these contracts work when there is a change in staffs but it sounds like we will have to pony up

240k is competitive for someone with his backround. I think Pitt used the qb coach money to help there though.

If the facts of the case were right in that article, I agree with Douglas. Pitt should pay him the money he is owed.

Pitt plucked him away from another BCS school in Iowa State, so yeah, I didn't think he'd came cheap.
Makes you wonder how much House was making as DC. Most posters seemed to think it was in that range or less, which would be kind of weird.

It's impossible to determine if he has a case without knowing the contract's specifics and knowing what procedures were followed during the firing.

Termination procedures (with or without cause) should be detailed in the contract, such as buyout (if any) and the minimum notification requirement. It's seems highly doubtful that full-term money would be guaranteed upon early termination, so he may be making a case that contract term procedures was not followed. Only speculation, at this point.

I think he was hired as an "analyst"?? My guess is they are at the max for assts. Sorta like the 9 suits on Dixon's bench for games??

Pitt just needs to show the jury the 4th quarter of the bowl game and then ask them if the secondary coach deserves $240,000. Pitt should counter sue for failure to perform, fraud & impersonating a football coach.
