"Last year, former Pitt baseball (and before that, football) player Kevan Smith made his major league debut with the Chicago White Sox. Smith played in seven games last year, batting only .125.

He was back in AAA this year but a couple of elbow issues have landed White Sox starter Geovany Soto on the disabled list and that has opened the door for Smith to get another shot. Smith got off to sort of a slow start at the plate but has heated up a bit lately.

On the year, Smith is hitting only .205. However, he's starting to find his way, it seems. In his last six games, he's batting .333 (6-18) and also had a pair of doubles. He's also up to a respectable .267 for the entire month of May and is making the most of his second chance with the team.

Soto has landed on the disabled list already twice this year. If Smith continues to hit, he could find himself continuing to get some playing time even after Soto comes back. Soto is hitting for more power than Smith (three home runs on the year to Smith's none for his career) but is also only batting .190."

Wish nothing but the best for the kid. Grew up in the same neighborhood as him and was friends with his older brother. Remember many-a street hockey, backyard football, and wiffle ball game with them.

Also interesting to note is basically living almost directly behind the Smith family (and a few doors down from my family) was the Clausen family, uncle and aunt of the famous Clausen football family. In the mid-late 90s and early 2000s, some combination of Rick and Casey and Jimmy seemed to always come in and visit for a week or so in the summer. Made for an interesting game of backyard football!

I met Kevan and his family when the freshmen moved into the Pitt dorms in 05 and Nate and Kevan were roommates.. A great family and best of luck and a successful career for a great guy..

If a couple guys hold on to passes that were in their breadbasket ... And those games won rather then lost as a result... wonder if things could have been different...

I remember the game Michigan State that he started. Shady had a coming out game as a freshman and busted a long TD run. Who was the WR that dropped a wide open TD pass in that game?

That does ring a bell.
Snake bit guy for us! Sound bite: "Holding ... 88 on the offense" ... after every big Pitt offensive play in the 13-9 game, even though he was totally innocent...later recalled him getting pegged for a phantom offensive PI after catching a (what should have been) game winning TD vs. Rutgers. The Big East couldn't steal the brawl for WVU with their bullshit calls but was more successful fixing the RU game.
