McCaffery from Iowa a candidate to replace Dixon do you think?

He is a Philadelphia boy--high school basketball legend there. Nicknamed "White Magic" in high school.

Has coached at mid to low level DI schools out east before taking the Iowa job 6 years ago.

Took Iowa from rubbish after they fired Todd Lickliter and now has had the Hawkeyes in the NCAA tourney the past 3 years and they won their 1st round game in the past two years there. 3 seasons ago Iowa played in the Final of the NIT tourney and lost to Baylor.

This season in early February had Iowa up to as high as #3 nationally.

Has oldest son already committed to Iowa and he'll be a high school senior next season and considered at Top 100 recruit for next year. His next oldest son is a freshman in high school and considered already a DI talent also.

Downsides: 57 years old (maybe maybe not considered a downside). Also his Iowa team has finished very badly in the regular season in 2 of the last 3 years--including this past season.

Some speculation already in Iowa that he might have some interest in the job if Pitt was interested in him. However, sounds as if he and the family really enjoy Iowa City and his wife (strong personality) is from Minneapolis originally (only 4.5 hrs. from Iowa City) and her family still there so he may also have no interest in leaving.

I believe is currently being paid in the $1.7 million range annually.

Lost his team this year, quit on him at the end and embarrassed themselves with their effort against villanova

NO thanks, and it isn;t gonna be him anyway. Our AD made it clear he's looking for someone who recruits his ass off.

Not sure he can recruit well enough. Pitt needs an elite recruiter first to have a chance year in and year out with the elites.

Just for the record, McCaffery is considered one of the hardest recruiters as a Head Coach that exists; and there's plenty of his peers that say that.

McCaffery has kept Iowa in the game with some high level recruits the past few years, Tyler Ulis of Kentucky most notably, but lost out barely in the end. Iowa not an easy place to recruit to.

McCaffery may not be the right guy for Pitt and for him Pitt may not be the right job, but to say he isn't known as working his ass off as a recruiter would be a very false statement.

Reactions: Pitt MD
McCaffery is not leaving Iowa for the Pitt job even with his state of PA roots. As right now the Pitt job is no better than the gig he has at Iowa so why leave? The only job most believe he'd leave Iowa for would be Notre Dame, where he was an assistant coach under John McLeod and met his current wife there as she played college ball there and was an assistant on the women's team at Notre Dame.
