Maybe under appreciate isn’t the right word. But many (including Barnes) though his success would be easy to replicate.
I never met a single fan who wanted him gone at that time. Frustrated at times yes, but the vast majority of fans knew we had it good.

He actually typed this:

Not Accurate That Capel Isn’t Recruiting Well
Hey, you can’t recruit poorly if there aren’t any commits to evaluate!

It's incredible that he places no blame on Capel for losing recruits. I don't care why they were lost, it is ultimately the coaches fault for poor recruiting and roster management when you don't have a backup plan when you lose a recruit. You cannot count on any kids sticking to his word until he is on campus.

I love how he puts together an imaginary team. That is just another strike against Capel. Not being able to retain good players (XJ and Toney) and then wasting time and losing Reid isn’t a positive in my book. Maybe Vuk is SMF. 🤔
I agree he recruited “well enough”.

The problem is molding a “team” , roster management and “retaining” players.

But doesn't recruiting players who apparently do not fit your philosophy, style, or have character mean you really didn't recruit very well?

You're right Will. Concern over growing cracks in the program is not the same as wanting him gone. Outside of a couple idiots on this board, everyone I was in contact with were generally supportive of Coach Dixon. And very much surprised when he bailed.

I would think if you connected enough with a player to commit, you could get that player to commit to being part of a team.

Huge strike that he can’t retain good players. Just shows his lack of leadership & the poor culture in “his” program. Unlike our FB program that has true leadership, very good culture and a family atmosphere.

No, SMF thinks Femi is better than XJ still.

Not to pile on this guy as I haven’t lived in Pittsburgh for years and am not familiar with him, but reading that article I get the feeling his knowledge of college basketball is very limited.

You could summarize the writer of that article pretty well if you just remove the words "of college basketball" from your post.

There were plenty here on the Lair. The night of the Wisconsin loss, it felt like the majority.
I agree with that. And I was probably one of them. But after a couple days, I think most of us cooled off and had a reality check. I was sick when I saw the official word he was gone.

but most fans aren’t on the lair. They have lives . Lol

One of the loudest now was one of the biggest complainers then. This all sucks but some got what they deserve.

Who knows where it would have gone. Nobody does. But he took a bottom feeder and made a couple NCAAs. We then became among the bottom feeders in fairly short order.

Can anyone explain the inclusion of Efton Reid as seemingly part of the evidence to defend Capel’s recruiting?

Glad I wasn’t the only one who didn’t get that. I read that part twice and then gave up . It was like a riddle

That’s a short answer - no.

If second place counted Dixon would have been god like.

I’ll keep saying it. Vukovcan is a buffoon. Can’t even call him a lightweight.

He was insinuating that because LSU cheated to get him then it wasn't Capels fault that he lost him. Very twisted logic.

I think his point is that Capel was on Reid early, recruited him effectively and everyone thought he was coming to Pitt, until the last second. He ends up going to LSU, which was under investigation for paying players, and whose coach was fired today. The implication is that Capel was out recruited by money.

Well … then that’s dumb.

Yes I was furious after the loss then really bummed when it seemed inevitable he was gone then crestfallen when they hired Stallings.

I enjoyed many moments of the Dixon era - big wins, Pete was rockin, etc. However, the downfall of Pitt's program was not in letting Dixon walk....it was in letting Dixon walk AND THEN hiring Stallings. If Stallings was the hire, then yes Dixon should have been kept instead. Though a part of the story that is often glossed over is that Dixon wanted to leave, so keeping him much longer was not an option anyway.

My motto was “ before his career is over it will be the Jamie Dixon court at the Peterson event center “ but like others I was unhappy about some of those tournament failures

Good article. Capel is not blameless but he is also not totally inept. Year 5 will tell the tale. So go ahead and attack me for not being hateful and hysterical.
