Glad they put that together. Before that, there was pretty much just the Wikipedia article that I had thrown together.
Although the athletic department seems to give preference to teams when it came into formal existence, many earlier teams and athletes, such as baseball, track and football, were contemporaneously considered as varsity athletes. The AD, to my chagrin, also regularly ignores what was definitively a varsity women's basketball program in the early 20th century, complete with varsity awards banquets and jv teams,...and those Pitt women's teams were regional powers. And by ignore, I mean they don't include any recognition of players or those teams' records, even if incomplete some years, in the women's basketball media guide. That, I'm sorry, is terrible. Early track records are also ignored even though plenty of meet records are available in now on-line publication in the Pitt digital archive.
Here's a picture of one of Pitt's earlier baseball teams circa the 1890s.
Again, notice the uniforms say W.U.P., which many now know is the name of the university prior to 1908: Western University of Pennsylvania. The building they are posing in front of is Main Hall, one of three university buildings on Pitt's then small campus located on what today is known as the North Side.
