Most here won’t care about this feat, but it’s better than six straight losing seasons. They can still finish .500 if they lose out, but impossible to finish below .500 on the season. The fact they keep getting down each game and then win or make it close, makes me wonder what could have been. Save the few blowouts, this has been a competitive team.

We used to take winning seasons for granted, and we never should. However, based on how awful the ACC is, this is barely any sort of feat.

Any time Pitt has a winning record in a varsity sport it is an achievement considering the university doesn't really give a damn.

It's obviously a subjective question about what you value spending tuition and tax dollars on but I think Pitt probably subsidizes the athletic department too much, sometimes to pay the salaries of coaches who left several years ago or for sports like baseball that generate little interest (fwiw I would be in favor of adding women's wrestling here in this incredible hotbed of national wrestling talent.)

All that said, I don't think there is a big financial obstacle to Pitt competing at a high level in ACC basketball at least. Capel will be back next year and I'll be rooting for him both because I like him and because I don't like buying out coaches contracts. But he will have a hotter seat if we miss the tournament, which is an appropriate situation considering his salary is substantial.
