Ellie Coffield, a midfielder from Mars (who is the #1 girls soccer team in the nation) is going against Elena Hinkson, a forward from Mechanicsburg, in the PIAA semifinals tonight at 6:00. Coffield is the reigning PA Gatorade Player of the Year, and Mars is the reigning state champion. Hinkson doesn’t have the same high school accolades, but has collected a bunch on the club circuit, including being named to the all-tournament team at the club national championships.

Mars is up 2-0 at the half. Coffield scored on a PK.

Where are you seeing Mars at #1? Not being argumentative, just curious who makes those rankings.

I know that NA is into the AAAA finals, so maybe there's a local pool of talent building, apparently highly concentrated near where 19, 228, 79, and the Turnpike merge. Probably unrelated to Pitt's success, but having a strong region certainly isn't going to hurt.

Interesting!

I was bored and went to go check it out, the WPIAL is through to every final -- and somewhat surprisingly, it's all northern suburb schools. NA, SV, Mars on both sides, Deer Lakes, North Catholic, and I forget the others. So I guess really was right on when I said "where 19, 228, 79, and the Turnpike merge".

It'd be rad if Mars could pull off the double; NA pulled off the double in XC about a week or two ago.

WPIAL girls soccer has been dominated by the south in the largest classification in recent memory. For example, of the schools who have won state titles in the last 20 years, outside of Norwin in 2017 and Pine Richland in 2005 when Klingenberg was there, they’ve all been in today’s AAAA south. Peters has won it 4 times, Moon 3 times, USC 1 time, and Canon Mac 1 time (with an additional state silver). This is the first time in the largest classification that a team from the north has got to Hershey since PR.
That said, there was been a power shift the last two years, as the south has been a bit down. The power has been in the north and NA has been dominant. Mars plays in the lower AAA division, and since all the powers moved up to AAAA in 2016 when the state went from 3 classes to 4, Mars are frankly on a different planet (no pun intended). If they were a AAAA team, they’d likely still be a top 4 team. That’s how good they are right now. But their road is much easier than NA and anyone from AAAA, and their players can rack up stats much easier as well. In WPIAL, the top scorers come from the lower classes because of the schedules and opponents. Mars has players at the top of the list. But you might find 1 player from AAAA that cracks the top 40 goal scorers. That’s how competitive it is. And how much of a disparity there are with high school stats.

Having a team like Mars with multiple players signed to play major-conference soccer (Pitt and Purdue, IIRC) is like cheating in AAA - especially for a public school. Mechanicsburg’s been a pretty solid team coming out of the midstate for a few years now, but really didn’t ever threaten Mars in any kind of serious way.

As an aside, the AAAA semifinal had a few Pitt signees/commits going against each other, too, with NA’s Sarah Schupansky and Madison Vukas both being 2021 Pitt signees, and Cumberland Valley’s Ellie Breech being a 2022 Pitt commit.

The WPIAL quarterfinal between North Allegheny and Norwin had four Pitt signees on the field.

Watched the Greensburg Central Catholic game from Hershey. The girl from Southern Columbia was unbelievable. Just a sophomore...but her instincts off the ball are really good off the ball...made such a good run on her first goal that she looked to everyone in the stadium like she was 7 yards offside, except she wasn’t. Then, she can score from anywhere on the field with either foot. She scored from 40 yards out to win the game. She has 51 goals and is just a sophomore. Granted it’s Class A soccer so the numbers are irrelevant, but wow I hope Coach Waldrum is involved with her.
And then the depth of Mars in the AAA game was way too much for Villa. The ball to put Dunaway in for the first goal was exquisite and it was from a player I hadn’t heard of before.

Just watched NA AAAA game. Best player on the field was the girl who scored game winner in OT. She’s headed to High Point.
Shupansky from NA (Pitt) looks like she will contribute at the ACC level.

How’d NA’s goalkeeper look? Pretty sure she’s the other Pitt signee from NA

She was hurt. The back up played the last few games...and she had a great game. I felt bad for her when the game winner was scored. There was nothing she could do.
